Job Description

We are seeking a Senior Environmental Consultant to join our growing team in the Lancashire region, supporting major infrastructure and construction projects across the area.

In this role, you will help ensure compliance with environmental legislation, permits, licences and consents, while working collaboratively with project teams and contractors to protect the environment and drive strong environmental performance on site.

Your key responsibilities will include:

Site Supervision & Environmental Compliance

  • Undertake regular environmental inspections of construction and work areas.
  • Identify, record and report environmental issues, providing advice on appropriate remedial actions.
  • Provide practical environmental guidance to contractors and project teams on site.

Ecological Surveys & Monitoring

  • Provide on-site ecological advice and support during construction activities.
  • Undertake ecological walkover surveys, assessments and species-specific checks.
  • Support the supervision of works taking place within or near sensitive habitats.

Environmental Reporting & Documentation

  • Provide written and verbal advice on environmental legislation, permits, consents and environmental planning constraints.
  • Prepare daily site records, compliance reports and ecological monitoring documentation.
  • Maintain accurate records of environmental observations and actions.

  • Gather, monitor and collate environmental performance information across project activities.
  • Support the implementation of initiatives designed to improve environmental performance and minimise environmental impacts.

Compliance & Environmental Management

  • Support compliance with relevant environmental legislation and project requirements.
  • Review and update Environmental Management Plans to ensure they remain compliant with legislation, consents and best practice.
  • Support internal audits and self-assessments of site activities against applicable legislation, processes, procedures and environmental standards.
  • Assist in demonstrating compliance with environmental protection measures and equipment requirements.

Project Support & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Support the planning and coordination of environmental deliverables across projects.
  • Work closely with senior environmental and ecological specialists to achieve project objectives.
  • Liaise with contractors, clients and other stakeholders to ensure environmental requirements are understood and effectively implemented.
  • Act as an on-site point of contact for environmental and ecological matters.

Qualifications

We are looking for an experienced environmental professional with a strong combination of environmental management and construction-site experience.

You will ideally have:

  • Experience working in an environmental management role, with practical on-site environmental and ecological experience.
  • Detailed knowledge of UK environmental legislation relevant to construction or industrial installations, alongside relevant guidance, industry standards and best practice.
  • Experience undertaking environmental or ecological fieldwork and supervising works in sensitive habitats.
  • Experience working within an Environmental Management System (EMS) aligned with BS EN ISO 14001:2015.
  • The confidence to work independently and influence contractors, project teams and stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and influencing skills.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritise effectively within a complex and fast-moving project environment.
  • An understanding of the client/contractor relationship and legal responsibilities under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 (CDM) would be desirable.
  • A degree or equivalent qualification in an environmental, engineering or science-related discipline.
  • A full UK or EU driving licence and willingness to travel to active construction and remote project sites across Lancashire and the wider region.
  • A valid CSCS Card.
  • Chartered status or membership of a relevant professional environmental body, such as ISEP, would be desirable.
