Environmental Engineer
Location: Bristol or Yeovil (On-site 2-3 days/week flexible)
Pay Rate: £50.00 - £70 per hour
Contract Duration: 6 Months (With potential extension)
Start Date: ASAP
Security Clearance: BPSS required (Must be eligible for SC clearance; UK National status required)
Work Pattern: 37.5hrs Mon - Fri
Top 3 Core Requirements
- Def Stan 00-051 & Environmental Case Work: Direct or indirect experience working with the UK MOD in developing Environmental Cases, Environmental Management Plans (EMP), Registers of Environmental Standards (RES), Environmental Features Matrices (EFM), and Environmental Case Reports (ECR).
- Legislative & Standard Expertise: In-depth knowledge of environmental legislation, policies, and standards (including UK REACH, ISO 14001, and Def Stan 00-051).
- Multidisciplinary Stakeholder Management: Ability to collaborate across engineering disciplines, customers, and supply chains to integrate environmental considerations throughout product lifecycles.
Role Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented Environmental Engineer to join a collaborative System Safety and Environmental Engineering team. In this role, you will ensure compliance with environmental legislation, policies, and standards while identifying, advising on, mitigating, and reducing environmental risks across complex defence products, systems, and services.

Key Responsibilities
- Environmental Deliverables: Develop and maintain Environmental Management Plans (EMP), Registers of Environmental Standards (RES), Environmental Features Matrices (EFM), Environmental Case Reports (ECR), and Hazardous Materials Reports in line with programme statements of work.
- Standard Integration: Support technical leads with integrating environmental considerations and management strategies into design, development, and sustainment programmes following Def Stan 00-051.
- Lifecycle Governance: Influence material selection, design, use, and disposal choices across system lifecycle phases.
- Audit & Compliance: Manage/support internal, external, and supplier environmental audit activities. Review engineering changes for environmental impact and implement corrective and preventative actions.
- Supplier & Stakeholder Engagement: Manage environmental requirement flow-downs to subcontractors, review/approve supplier deliverables, and facilitate environmental governance meetings.
- Sustainability & EHS Support: Support Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) teams, help maintain the Environmental Management System, and contribute to platform sustainability plans.

Qualifications & Essential Requirements
- Education: Degree (BSc/BEng or equivalent) in Engineering, Manufacturing Technology, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Data Science, or related technical field.
- Defence Experience: Practical knowledge of defence/aerospace environmental management and UK MOD standards.
- Clearance & Nationality: UK National status with BPSS clearance to start, and eligibility for Security Clearance (SC).
Desirable Attributes
- Environmental auditing experience within aerospace or highly regulated sectors.
- Proven background in environmental hazard identification, aspect/impact assessments, and risk analysis.
- Highly organised, capable of managing multiple project commitments to first-time quality standards.
