Environmental Advisor
Job Type: Permanent
Start Date: ASAP
Salary: £40,000 + £5,060 Car Allowance
Location: Workington
Hours: 40 hours per week
Role Information
We're looking for an experienced Environmental Advisor to support the successful delivery of major projects by providing expert environmental guidance throughout the project lifecycle. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about sustainability, compliance, and continuous improvement, and enjoys working collaboratively with project teams and external stakeholders.
You'll act as a trusted advisor, ensuring environmental standards are maintained while driving best practice across projects and supporting the business in achieving its environmental objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing environmental advice, support, and constructive challenge to project teams and stakeholders, promoting best practice across all activities.
- Building strong working relationships with managers and project teams, acting as a mentor on environmental legislation, policies, and procedures.
- Supporting projects from initial planning through to completion, ensuring environmental requirements are identified and effectively managed.
- Working collaboratively with project teams, designers, subcontractors, waste contractors, and specialist suppliers to achieve environmental compliance.
- Leading investigations into environmental incidents, identifying root causes, and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Monitoring completion of HART/HART-E reporting, including waste, sustainability, and environmental incidents, and producing accurate monthly reports.
- Acting as a key point of contact for clients and statutory bodies, representing the business professionally on all environmental matters.
- Delivering environmental awareness initiatives and identifying training requirements to improve environmental performance across project teams.
- Promoting innovation, sharing best practice, and identifying opportunities to enhance environmental performance and sustainability.
- Supporting the maintenance of environmental management systems, certifications, and licenses, while coordinating audit programmes and compliance activities.

Qualifications & Experience
To be successful in this role, you'll ideally have:
- Experience working with statutory bodies and clients, successfully managing environmental applications, planning conditions, permits, and regulatory compliance.
- Strong knowledge of ISO 14001, with experience leading or managing environmental audits and maintaining certified management systems.
- Experience of ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems and carbon reporting.
- Proven mentoring and coaching skills, with the ability to influence and support stakeholders at all levels.
- Degree qualified (or equivalent) in an environmental or relevant discipline.
- Full membership of IEMA (or equivalent professional body), or be working towards achieving this within 12 months.
- The ability to obtain UK Security Clearance (SC).
