Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council
We have an excellent opportunity for an experienced Environmental Health Practitioner to join our busy and professional Environmental Compliance Team.
Why Solihull?
It’s an exciting time to be working in Solihull. Our central location and ambitious growth plans mean you’ll be involved in high‑profile projects, including preparations for High Speed 2 (HS2) and major commercial and residential developments across the borough, such as Birmingham Airport, the National Exhibition Centre, and Arden Cross.
About The Role
This is a unique opportunity to make a real difference across a socially and economically diverse borough, delivering a wide range of Environmental Health services that help protect residents and improve local communities.
The role will have a strong focus on private sector housing, including housing standards and the regulation of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs). You will also be involved in tackling environmental crime and nuisance issues, as well as carrying out regulatory inspections, investigations, and enforcement activities.
Working as part of a proactive team, you will provide expert advice and guidance to residents, businesses, landlords, and other stakeholders. You will undertake inspections, investigate complaints, assess compliance with relevant legislation, and take appropriate enforcement action where necessary, ensuring a fair, consistent, and customer-focused approach at all times.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- A degree (or equivalent) in Environmental Health or related subject
- Experience of providing regulatory advice and taking enforcement action
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of legal processes and evidence gathering
- Be confident working independently and as part of a team
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, able to engage with a range of stakeholders and deal effectively with situations involving conflict.
- Knowledge and experience in the field of housing (desirable).
- A valid driving licence and access to a vehicle, to enable you to attend meetings and move around sites in the Borough where much of the team’s work is delivered.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
