Job Summary
Find the Story Behind the Evidence; Shape Environmental Protection across Defence.
This is not a traditional environmental role. It is an opportunity for an environmental professional to apply their expertise in a different way - turning information into insight and intelligence into action. If you enjoy investigating complex issues, identifying the important details that others might miss, and using evidence to influence decision-making, this role offers a unique chance to make a difference across Defence.
As part of the Defence Environmental Protection Regulator (DEPR), you will be responsible for gathering, analysing and assessing environmental intelligence from across the Ministry of Defence. Using your environmental knowledge and professional judgement, you will identify emerging risks, trends, opportunities and areas of concern, turning diverse information sources into clear, evidence-based assessments. The role requires someone who can look beyond individual pieces of information to understand the wider picture, whilst also having the attention to detail needed to identify the critical insights and implications for environmental protection. You will work closely with colleagues across the Defence Safety Authority, building relationships, challenging assumptions constructively, and helping improve the quality and use of environmental information.
DEPR is part of the Defence Safety Authority (DSA), an independent authority within the Ministry of Defence. As Defence's environmental regulator, DEPR provides regulation, assurance and enforcement across all Defence activities, from Front Line Commands to enabling organisations such as the National Armaments Directorate. This role offers a rare opportunity to develop a Defence-wide understanding of environmental protection and directly support the evidence base that informs senior leaders responsible for environmental performance across Defence.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
We welcome applications from candidates seeking flexible working arrangements, including part-time working and job share. This is a busy and high-profile role with responsibility for maintaining continuity across a broad portfolio of work, so any proposed arrangement will need to support effective delivery of business requirements. We encourage candidates to discuss their preferred working arrangements with us during the recruitment process so that we can explore options together.

The successful applicant will lead the DEPR Coordination Function, overseeing the collection, analysis and reporting of environmental intelligence from across Defence. You will provide evidence-based insight to inform regulatory assurance, annual reporting and senior decision-making. Key Responsibilities:
- Lead on the collection, analysis and reporting of environmental protection intelligence, information and datasets from across Defence.
- Research and assess environmental protection performance information to identify assurance gaps, risks and levels of environmental management across MOD.
- Analyse trends and issues arising from environmental assurance activities and provide evidence-based reporting to support improvement.
- Contribute environmental intelligence and evidence to the DEPR Annual Report and Defence Safety Authority Annual Assurance Report.
- Lead the DEPR Coordination Function, managing delivery plans and monitoring progress against team objectives.

- Develop and maintain governance arrangements and working agreements with other Defence Safety Authority regulators.
- Develop and maintain team processes, procedures, quality arrangements and SharePoint-based information management systems.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
