Purpose of the Role
We are seeking an Environmental Manager to join our Environment, Social Value and Quality Team in a key leadership position. You will drive environmental compliance, champion sustainability, and support Colas’ Environmental and Net Zero ambitions by providing technical leadership and assurance on environmental matters. This role involves mentoring advisors, managing environmental governance, and building environmental capability across the organisation to ensure legal, client, and corporate requirements are met.
Main Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the Environmental Team, promoting a culture of continuous improvement.
- Manage and improve the Environmental Management System (ISO 14001), along with supporting energy management (ISO 50001) and PAS 2080 compliance.
- Deliver training and guidance, lead environmental assurance activities, and provide expert advice on legislation and best practice.
- Support carbon reduction initiatives, waste and resource management compliance, and manage environmental data and reporting.
- Build strong stakeholder relationships and promote sustainable innovation.
- Provide environmental expertise to support tenders, business development, and client projects.

Ideal Candidate
- At least 5 years’ experience in environmental management within construction, highways, infrastructure, or related sectors.
- Proven expertise in maintaining ISO 14001 systems and managing compliance programmes.
- Practitioner membership of a relevant professional body (IEMA, CIWM, Energy Institute or equivalent) and possess an IEMA Certificate or equivalent qualification.
- A full UK driving licence is essential.
- Strong leadership, communication skills, and a commitment to sustainability are essential.
Package Description
Here at Colas, we offer a great total compensation package, including:
- A salary between £65,000 and £70,000 (dependent on experience and qualifications) PLUS Company car/car allowance
- Our Colas Pension Scheme has combined contributions of up to 10%
