Salary from £66,000 with up to 20% Annual Bonus, Family Healthcare and Car Allowance

Purpose
The Environmental Manager is accountable for leading environmental management across SP Transmission’s (SPT) Core, Strategic and HVDC portfolios, ensuring environmental requirements, risks and obligations are translated into clear controls and consistent delivery across the full project lifecycle.
You will be responsible for translating any new or evolving Environmental or legal requirements into practical plans and standards that can be embedded into business as usual.
Reporting to the Head of Quality, Environmental and IMS, you will lead environmental capability through Lead Environmental Advisors and wider specialist teams, sets portfolio priorities, allocating internal and external resource, providing management oversight of environmental performance, compliance, assurance and escalation. You will play a key part in translating functional direction into practical delivery arrangements that support RIIO-T3 objectives, major capital investment and wider business commitments.
Responsibilities
As Environmental Manager, you will lead the Environmental Management function across SPT’s Core, Strategic and HVDC portfolios, translating strategic direction from the Head of Quality, Environmental and IMS into clear priorities, controls and delivery expectations for portfolio and project teams.
Through the leadership of Lead Environmental Advisors and a wider team of Environmental Specialists, you will drive performance, capability development and workload planning, ensuring the appropriate environmental support is in place across a complex and expanding project portfolio.
You will be responsible for developing and maintaining the environmental resourcing model across portfolios, making informed decisions on resource deployment, priorities, escalation and intervention to balance programme requirements, business risk and available capability. You will provide leadership, challenge and support on significant or recurring environmental matters, determining where issues require escalation, additional controls or changes to delivery approaches. A key aspect of the role will be promoting a consistent Environmental management culture across internal teams and delivery partners, embedding clear expectations, governance standards and accountability for compliance and best practice.
Working closely with Regulators, statutory bodies, local authorities and other key stakeholders, you will lead and coordinate engagement on material Environmental matters, ensuring obligations, expectations and risks are understood and effectively managed throughout the project lifecycle. You will oversee environmental issues arising from stakeholder engagement, determining appropriate business responses and ensuring commitments, consent conditions and agreed actions are translated into project requirements and operational controls. The role also includes oversight of framework-approved specialist Environmental Consultants and Contractors, ensuring surveys, assessments and advisory services are delivered safely, compliantly, to the required quality standards and in line with programme requirements. In addition, you will contribute to relevant legislative, regulatory and industry consultations where these impact SPT’s environmental obligations, risk profile or future delivery requirements.
You will provide strong Environmental leadership across portfolio, Engineering, Construction, Procurement and senior leadership teams, influencing decisions and embedding Environmental expectations into Governance, Planning, Design, Procurement and project delivery activities. By driving behavioural change and accountability across portfolios, you will ensure Environmental considerations remain integral to delivery. You will also provide management assurance that projects are operating in accordance with legislation, consent requirements, company procedures, codes of practice and industry standards, intervening where controls, compliance arrangements or behaviours require improvement. Through robust reporting and assurance arrangements, you will ensure clear visibility of environmental risks, performance trends, compliance status and intervention priorities across the portfolio.

Maintaining oversight of Environmental risk throughout the project lifecycle will be central to the role. You will ensure risks are identified, assessed, controlled and reviewed in accordance with ISO 14001 requirements, legal obligations and SPT environmental processes. You will review emerging and residual environmental risks, determining where additional mitigation measures, specialist support, escalation or management intervention are required to protect programme delivery, cost, compliance and reputation. You will monitor contractor and project performance against environmental expectations and contractual requirements, using inspections, audits, performance data and reporting to challenge performance and drive continuous improvement.
You will also support the delivery of T3 sustainability and environmental commitments through effective data management, reporting and assurance activities, escalating material issues or performance concerns where necessary. Oversight of environmental non-compliances, corrective actions and assurance findings will form an important part of the role, ensuring that issues are addressed effectively and that recurring weaknesses are identified and resolved.
In addition, you will ensure that Environmental controls, records and reporting arrangements are maintained in line with both SPT and regulatory requirements, with clear accountability for implementation across delivery teams and specialist functions. You will drive the consistent application of environmental management tools, governance arrangements and control frameworks across the portfolio to provide effective traceability, assurance and risk management. By reviewing Environmental performance information, audits, inspections, incidents and lessons learned, you will identify trends, recurring issues and opportunities for improvement, driving enhancements to processes, controls and behaviours where required. You will promote continual improvement in Environmental management practices across Planning, Engineering, Construction and Commissioning activities, supporting the business in moving beyond minimum compliance standards where appropriate. Finally, you will provide assurance that all required environmental licences, permits and approvals have been identified, secured and translated into effective delivery controls before works commence.
What you’ll bring
We are looking for an experienced Environmental professional with a strong track record of leading Environmental management activities across complex Engineering, Infrastructure or Construction programmes. You will be degree qualified in Environmental Management, Engineering, Ecology, Geography or a related discipline, or be able to demonstrate equivalent relevant experience.
You will bring significant experience of Environmental management within a complex project delivery environment, including responsibility for multiple projects or portfolios. This will be supported by proven experience of leading Environmental teams through others, including line management, performance management, coaching, development and effective resource deployment. You will have the ability to translate Environmental strategy, policy and management system requirements into practical controls, processes and delivery plans that support successful project outcomes.
A strong understanding of environmental legislation, consent compliance, ISO 14001 and wider environmental management system requirements is essential. You will be able to apply these requirements proportionately across a complex delivery environment, balancing regulatory obligations with operational and programme needs. You will also have demonstrable experience of overseeing environmental risk management, assurance activities, audits, inspections, incident response and corrective actions throughout the project lifecycle.

The successful candidate will be an effective communicator and influencer, with experience of working closely with project, engineering, construction, commercial and leadership teams to drive environmental performance, support compliance and influence key delivery decisions. You will also have experience of managing specialist environmental consultants, contractors and framework providers, including the allocation of work, performance oversight and constructive challenge to ensure quality and value are achieved.
You will possess strong judgement and decision-making capabilities, with the ability to balance environmental risk, operational practicality, programme requirements and competing business priorities. Experience of using environmental performance data, reporting and trend analysis to support management decisions, prioritisation and continual improvement will be important, alongside the ability to communicate complex issues clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
In addition, you will be proficient in Microsoft Office applications and comfortable using environmental and business systems to support reporting, record management and assurance activities.
Minimum requirements
To be successful in this role, you will be able to demonstrate significant experience of Environmental management within a complex Engineering, Infrastructure or Construction environment, working across multiple projects or portfolios. You will hold a degree in an Environmental, Engineering or related discipline, or be able to demonstrate equivalent relevant experience.
You will have proven experience of leading Environmental teams and deploying resources to support project delivery, compliance and performance across a portfolio of projects. You will also have demonstrable experience of managing Environmental risk, assurance activities, audits, non-compliances and corrective actions within an Engineering and/or Construction setting.
A strong working knowledge of environmental legislation, ISO 14001 and Environmental management system requirements within a project delivery environment is essential. You will also have a proven ability to influence senior stakeholders and translate Environmental requirements into practical, proportionate controls that support successful project and portfolio delivery.
The role requires a willingness to undertake occasional travel and short trips away from home, together with the flexibility to adjust working hours where required to meet business needs and operational priorities.
