Environmental Protection Officer
We are seeking an experienced Environmental Health Officer / Environmental Protection Officer to join a local authority Environmental Health team on a temporary contract.
Location: East Midlands
Office Presence: Minimum 3 days per week on site
Contract: Approximately 3–6 months, with potential for extension
Key Responsibilities
- Investigate commercial and industrial statutory nuisance complaints, including noise, odour, dust, smoke, light pollution, and air pollution.
- Undertake reactive Environmental Protection and Pollution Control work across the district.
- Monitor and regulate air quality, including NO₂ monitoring and air quality complaints.
- Provide Environmental Protection and Pollution Control input into planning consultations.
- Investigate contaminated land enquiries where required.
- Undertake inspections, risk assessments, and complaint investigations relating to permitted installations and pollution control.
- Investigate complaints relating to commercial and industrial premises, including noise, waste, and associated environmental issues.
- Investigate waste and fly-tipping complaints involving commercial, industrial, and privately owned land.
- Provide Environmental Protection input into licensing consultations and applications.
- Investigate noise complaints relating to licensed premises and outdoor events.
- Support licensing reviews relating to public nuisance and noise.
- Provide advice and support to less experienced members of the team.

Essential Experience & Qualifications
- Qualified and registered Environmental Health Officer.
- Recent Local Authority Environmental Health experience.
- Strong experience within Environmental Protection and Pollution Control.
- Proven competency in statutory nuisance and pollution investigations.
- Experience investigating commercial and industrial noise, odour, dust, smoke, and other environmental complaints.
- Experience with air quality monitoring and assessment.
- Experience with pollution control permitting and regulated installations.
- Ability to work reactively and undertake frequent site visits.
- Confident working independently while providing support to less experienced colleagues.
- Strong understanding of relevant Environmental Protection legislation and enforcement procedures.
