Environmental Health Practitioner (Environmental Protection)
Location: Devon
Contract Length: 6 Months
Rate: £50phr
Hours: Up to 37 hours per week
IR35: Inside IR35
Working Pattern: Minimum 3 days per week on-site
Start Date: ASAP
Mileage: Business mileage reimbursed in line with Council policy
Overview
My client is seeking an experienced Environmental Health Practitioner with a strong background in Environmental Protection, particularly in the investigation and enforcement of:
- Statutory nuisance complaints
- Noise nuisance and acoustics
- Pest control matters
- Filthy and verminous premises
- Environmental Protection Act 1990 enforcement
The successful candidate will be expected to take ownership of an operational caseload with minimal supervision and contribute immediately to frontline service delivery.

Key Responsibilities
- Investigate environmental protection complaints.
- Conduct site inspections and regulatory compliance activities.
- Undertake noise monitoring and evidence gathering.
- Prepare enforcement cases and take proportionate regulatory action.
- Manage a varied caseload independently.
- Deliver statutory Environmental Protection functions in accordance with legislation and Council policies.
Essential Requirements
Candidates should demonstrate:
- Significant local authority Environmental Protection experience
- Strong working knowledge of the Environmental Protection Act 1990
- Experience investigating statutory nuisance cases
- Practical application of noise legislation and guidance
- Noise monitoring, acoustics, and evidence gathering expertise
- Inspection and enforcement experience
- Ability to work autonomously and make sound regulatory decisions
- Relevant Environmental Health qualification (preferably CIEH accredited)

Ideal Candidate Profile
This role would suit an experienced Environmental Health Officer (EHO) or Environmental Health Practitioner who has recently worked within a local authority Environmental Protection team and can quickly take on statutory nuisance and noise-related investigations with limited supervision.
