Purpose of the Role

The Environmental Services Assistant plays a vital role in maintaining exceptional standards of cleanliness and presentation throughout the shopping centre, working with front-of-house mall, back-of-house, car park, and waste areas.

As a key representative of the centre, you will contribute to creating a positive and lasting impression for all visitors. The role requires both independent working and effective collaboration within a team to ensure all designated areas are maintained to the highest standards of cleanliness, safety, and operational efficiency.

You will also support the delivery of effective waste management and recycling services, contributing to environmental sustainability and operational performance while promoting a positive image of the centre and its surroundings.

You will have the ability to work both individually and within a team. You will be capable of carrying out your duties without constant supervision and be proactive in ensuring your area of responsibility meets the highest possible standards of cleanliness and safety.

Responsibilities

Waste / Service Deck Area

  • This is a hands-on role responsible for delivering high standards of cleanliness and effective waste management across the site.
  • To ensure all daily, weekly, monthly, and periodic tasks are completed in line with agreed schedules. The role includes daily waste collection, segregation, and recycling activities, ensuring compliance with environmental policies and operational procedures.
  • To help promote recycling initiatives and support the centre’s sustainability targets. Coordinate with the waste team and tenants to ensure proper disposal and that recycling practices are adhered to.
  • Ensure that all waste disposal areas, compactor and baling areas, service deck, and general back-of-house areas are kept debris-free and clean.

Car Park

  • Cleaning operations within the centre’s car park, ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for visitors.
  • Daily cleaning of car park areas including floors, stairwells, entrances, exits, perimeter, piazza, signage, and pay stations. To maintain high standards of cleanliness, and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Report hazards, incidents, and maintenance issues to management.

Mall Area

  • Deliver consistently high standards of cleanliness across all public and staff areas and provide excellent customer service, maintaining a professional and welcoming environment.
  • Respond to customer queries, feedback, and complaints in line with company procedures.
  • Follow all departmental procedures, schedules, and cleaning specifications.
  • Manage waste from the mall appropriately, including safe handling, sorting, and disposal in line with recycling procedures.
  • Maintain sanitary facilities to a high standard, ensuring supplies are replenished as required.

Clean a wide range of areas including:

  • Floors (internal and external)
  • Toilets and washroom facilities
  • Windows, walls, signage, and fixtures
  • Stairwells, lifts, and escalators
  • Offices, staff areas, and communal spaces
  • External entrances, walkways, and landscaped areas

General

  • Complete required documentation including task & checklists and following cleaning schedules.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including COSHH and use of PPE.
  • Safely dispose of clinical waste and sharps in accordance with policy.
  • Report maintenance defects and hazards promptly.
  • Work closely with colleagues and supervisors to ensure smooth operations.
  • Attend training sessions and team meetings as required.
  • Uphold all company health, safety, and operational standards at all times.
  • Act as an ambassador for the centre, promoting a positive image of the team and organisation.
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by management.
  • Operate cleaning machinery safely and effectively (e.g. scrubber dryers, vacuum cleaners, pressure washers, escalator cleaners, high-level cleaners).

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

  • Confident/friendly disposition
  • Ability to handle heavy equipment and machinery used in waste recycling processes.
  • Ability to walk, bend, push, pull, and lift repetitively during working hours.
  • Self-motivated with ability to identify and complete needed tasks without direct supervision.
  • Good communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Flexible/supportive team player.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • 1 to 3 years’ proven experience working as a waste operative/cleaner.
  • Knowledge of cleaning chemicals, proper storage, and disposal methods.
  • Ability to operate complex machinery (after training) such as compactors, balers, and ride-on cleaning machines.

Desirable:

  • Cleaning related qualifications such as BICS.
  • Knowledge of COSHH policies and procedures.
  • Excellent customer care skills.
  • Hold a full UK driving license.

Working Hours - Shift Pattern

  • 4 on 2 off / 9 Hour Shift (Unpaid Break 1hr)

Salary

  • £12.71 per hour
