Environmental Specialist

Salary: from £55,000 with excellent company benefits
Position: Permanent/Hybrid (3 days office/site and 2 days remote)

Purpose
The Quality Team plays a key role within SP Transmission, providing business-wide leadership, strategy and direction by integrating Quality, Environmental and Safety policies, programmes and processes that support operational excellence, legal compliance and safe working practices across the organisation.
This team delivers systems support and expert advice to more than 350 employees and agency professionals across SP Transmission, as well as 800 to 1,000 contractors working throughout our supply chain on project construction sites during the T3 price control period. As part of this role, you will contribute to the delivery of HSEQ reporting and analysis for the SP Transmission Director and Senior Management Team, helping to identify issues across the portfolio, plan appropriate mitigation actions, and propose and lead annual HSEQ improvement initiatives.
Acting as the lead for all environmental management system-related matters across projects, you will ensure Environmental Advisors are appropriately allocated and that projects receive a consistent, high-quality service and level of support. You will also serve as the first point of contact for environmental escalation issues, providing guidance and direction when required.
Working closely with the Environmental Manager, you will support the delivery of environmental requirements, objectives and targets, while providing advice and training to project teams as necessary. The role also involves undertaking peer reviews of work completed by Environmental Advisors to ensure consistency and quality across the function.
You will be responsible for auditing, identifying and following up on system deviations, as well as coordinating departmental and company-wide improvement initiatives. In addition, you will manage the systems applicable to SP Transmission Major Projects, controlling, updating and communicating procedures and guidance in line with company requirements.
Responsibilities
In this role, you will take the lead in evolving the guides and documents used to ensure appropriate Environmental and sustainability requirements are embedded within the procurement of goods and services. You will contribute to the implementation, maintenance and continual improvement of the Environmental Management System, while leading and directing the approach to achieve and maintain compliance with the ISO 14001 standard.
You will oversee the Integrated Management System (IMS) from an environmental perspective across SP Transmission Projects, driving change and identifying opportunities to enhance processes and improve performance. Building and maintaining strong internal and external stakeholder relationships will be key to driving positive change for the benefit of SP Transmission Projects, and you will represent the business during external audit certification activities.
A key aspect of the role will involve developing opportunities for best practice across the business, including the regular facilitation of workshops and meetings. You will analyse and review internal and external performance indicators, reporting on these monthly and providing feedback and guidance on overall performance. Through a clear understanding of the needs and expectations of SP Transmission and the wider objectives behind proposed changes, you will influence decision-making and support business improvement initiatives.

You will conduct internal BREEAM Infrastructure assessments for projects, identifying opportunities for process improvement and raising awareness of sustainable practices. In addition, you will implement and amend processes to incorporate sustainable practices, while creating and updating processes relevant to SP Transmission Projects and communicating these effectively across the business.
The role also includes creating audit programmes and conducting audits against the ISO 14001 standard, coordinating regular team meetings that provide updates on business activities, environmental performance and the status of objectives, and providing support and guidance on environmental processes. You will ensure all environmental processes and procedures remain accessible within the IMS and are subject to regular review.
Working closely with procurement teams, you will consult on process improvements that enhance supply chain opportunities. You will also prepare and present environmental systems updates in slide format for senior management, while reviewing and recording environmental incidents to identify and establish trends in root causes.
What you’ll bring
We're looking for an experienced Environmental professional who is passionate about driving continuous improvement, influencing positive change and helping to embed best practice across a complex project environment. To excel in this role, you'll bring proven experience in coaching and facilitation, together with the ability to review, implement and enhance HSEQ management systems and processes. You will have detailed knowledge of ISO certifications, particularly ISO 14001 and sustainability requirements, alongside strong IT skills and proficiency in Microsoft applications.
You will have a strong awareness of the regulatory issues impacting the business and a proven ability to work within and influence a team environment. Experience of incident reporting, investigation and root cause analysis is essential, enabling you to identify trends, drive learning and support continual improvement across projects and business activities.
As a minimum, you will have significant experience in an Environmental role within a similar-sized organisation and be degree qualified, or equivalent, in HSEQ or a related discipline. You will also bring extensive experience of management systems and working with external certification bodies, ideally gained within a commercially focused Utility, Engineering or Construction business.
You will possess in-depth knowledge of the current ISO 14001 standard and hold a Lead Auditor qualification, supported by practical auditing experience. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with strong PC skills and proficiency in Microsoft applications. Experience of working across a portfolio of projects is required, and you will be comfortable both leading teams and collaborating effectively with others to achieve shared objectives. A current valid driving licence is also required.
