What's the role?

The Environmental & Sustainability Director is responsible for developing and implementing BRUSH's environmental and sustainability strategy, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation and regulations, driving continuous improvement in environmental performance, and embedding sustainable business practices across the organisation.

The role provides strategic leadership on climate change, carbon reduction, ESG, environmental compliance, resource efficiency, biodiversity, circular economy initiatives and sustainable business growth, while supporting the organisation's broader commercial and operational objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

Sustainability

  • Develop and implement the organisation's sustainability strategy.
  • Lead the delivery of sustainability objectives, targets and roadmaps aligned to corporate goals.
  • Advise the Management Team and Board on environmental risks, opportunities and emerging legislation.
  • Champion sustainability and environmental stewardship throughout the organisation.

Environmental Compliance & Governance

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental legislation, permits, licences and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain and develop environmental management systems, including ISO14001 certification where relevant.
  • Monitor environmental performance and ensure effective governance structures are in place.
  • Lead environmental audits, inspections and compliance reviews.

Sustainability & ESG

  • Develop and oversee ESG reporting and disclosures.
  • Lead climate-related initiatives including carbon reduction plans and net-zero programmes.
  • Drive improvements in resource efficiency, waste reduction, water management and energy performance.
  • Establish sustainability KPIs and measure organisational progress against targets.

Carbon & Energy Management

  • Develop and monitor carbon reduction strategies.
  • Oversee greenhouse gas reporting and carbon footprint assessments.
  • Identify opportunities for renewable energy and energy efficiency improvements.
  • Lead initiatives to reduce Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.

Stakeholder Management

  • Act as the principal advisor on environmental and sustainability matters.
  • Build relationships with regulators, customers, suppliers, local communities and industry bodies.
  • Support customer bids, tenders and contracts requiring sustainability input.
  • Represent the organisation externally on sustainability matters.

Culture & Engagement

  • Promote environmental awareness and sustainability across the workforce.
  • Develop communication and engagement programmes to support behavioural change.
  • Ensure managers and employees understand their environmental responsibilities.

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, develop and inspire environmental and sustainability team (current 2 direct reports).
  • Set clear objectives and performance standards.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, innovation and continuous improvement.

Risk Management

  • Identify and mitigate environmental and sustainability risks.
  • Ensure robust systems are in place for incident reporting and investigation.
  • Monitor emerging environmental trends and legislative developments.

What Are We Looking For:

Qualifications

  • Degree in Environmental Science/Technology, Sustainability, Engineering, Geography or a related discipline.
  • Chartered status or equivalent professional qualification desirable (e.g. IEMA, CIWEM, CEnv, ESOS Lead Assessor or similar).
  • Membership of a recognised environmental or sustainability professional body.

Experience

  • Significant senior leadership experience in environmental, sustainability or ESG roles.
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing environmental strategies.
  • Experience of leading sustainability transformation programmes.
  • Experience of environmental compliance within a regulated industry.
  • Proven experience of stakeholder management at executive and board level.
  • Experience of managing multidisciplinary teams and budgets.
  • Experience leading carbon reduction and net-zero initiatives
