Description

The post holder will contribute to excellence in learning by preparing and delivering high-quality teaching, learning, and assessment materials, whilst providing effective support to learners. The post holder will report directly to the Curriculum Manager and work collaboratively and supportively with colleagues and external partners.

The role will specifically involve:

Teaching and Assessment:

  • Planning and delivering engaging, inclusive learning sessions, together with effective assessment and feedback to support learner progress and achievement.

Curriculum Development:

  • Contributing to the development, review, and enhancement of curriculum content, learning resources, and teaching approaches to meet learners’ needs and curriculum requirements.

Quality and Standards:

  • Contributing to the maintenance and continuous improvement of high standards of teaching, learning, and assessment, in line with organisational policies and quality assurance requirements.

Student Support:

  • Providing appropriate academic and pastoral support to learners, helping them overcome barriers to learning and achieve their educational goals.

Continuing Professional Development:

  • Engaging actively in continuing professional development to enhance subject knowledge, teaching practice, and professional effectiveness.

The post holder will have an agreed teaching commitment in terms of class contact hours. Successful applicants may also be required to deliver ESOL provision in off-campus community settings, demonstrating flexibility and a commitment to providing accessible, learner-centred education within the wider community.

Key Responsibilities

Relationships

  • Establish and maintain positive, collaborative, and supportive working relationships with the Curriculum Manager, colleagues, and external partners to contribute to the delivery of an outstanding learning and teaching experience.
  • Provide timely, appropriate, and learner-centred advice, guidance, and support to students, promoting their engagement, progression, achievement, and wellbeing.
  • Participate actively and constructively in relevant meetings, committees, working groups, and other forums, contributing professional expertise and supporting effective decision-making.
  • Develop and sustain productive partnerships with employers, schools, universities, and other relevant stakeholders to strengthen curriculum provision, enhance learner opportunities, and support progression.
  • Provide appropriate specialist advice and guidance on health and safety, equipment, resources, and other matters relating to the curriculum area, ensuring compliance with relevant policies, procedures, and legislative requirements.

General Responsibilities

  • Contribute proactively and professionally as a member of the Curriculum Team, providing specialist expertise, constructive challenge, and informed advice while promoting a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and high professional standards.
  • Lead and contribute to projects, initiatives, and improvement activities as directed by the line manager, ensuring agreed objectives, outcomes, and timescales are achieved.
  • Build and maintain effective internal and external partnerships, promoting collaboration, sharing good practice, and identifying opportunities to enhance the quality and impact of curriculum provision.
  • Maintain current and relevant knowledge of developments within the sector, including emerging trends, policy changes, legislation, qualifications, and good practice, and consider their implications for the College’s current provision and future strategic direction.
  • Ensure full awareness of, and compliance with, all College policies, procedures, regulations, and professional standards relevant to the role.
  • Actively promote and embed equality, diversity, inclusion, and respect across all aspects of College life, ensuring that learners, staff, and partners are treated fairly, equitably, and with dignity.
  • Champion the College’s ethos, values, and strategic priorities, acting as a positive role model and contributing to an inclusive, supportive, and high-performing culture for both staff and students.
  • Provide appropriate leadership, guidance, and support to colleagues where required, encouraging continuous professional development, effective performance, and the sharing of knowledge and good practice.
  • Contribute meaningfully to self-evaluation, quality assurance, and continuous improvement activities within the curriculum area, using evidence and feedback to identify strengths, address areas for development, and enhance outcomes.
  • Maintain the highest standards of confidentiality and professional integrity when handling information relating to learners, staff, partners, and other sensitive College matters.
  • Understand and fulfil all responsibilities associated with the College’s regulatory, statutory, and legal obligations as both an education provider and employer, including requirements under the Data Protection Act, UK GDPR, and Freedom of Information Act.
  • Ensure that any actual or suspected loss, unauthorised disclosure, or unlawful processing of personal data is reported promptly and managed in accordance with the College’s Data Protection Policy and established procedures.
  • Promote and maintain a safe, healthy, and supportive learning and working environment by exercising appropriate duty of care for personal health and safety and that of students, colleagues, visitors, and other individuals who may be affected by College activities.
  • Complete all mandatory, statutory, and role-specific training within the required timescales, including training relating to health and safety, equality, diversity, safeguarding, data protection, and other relevant areas.
  • Undertake any other duties and responsibilities that are reasonably commensurate with the level and nature of the post, as directed by the Principal or Vice Principal.

Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Educated to a minimum of HND, SCQF Level 8
  • CELTA (or equivalent)
  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development

Desirable:

  • Teaching Qualification in Further Education
  • DELTA / MSc TESOL (or equivalent)

Knowledge:

  • Demonstrable knowledge of Further Education in Scotland
  • National priorities for education
  • The skills priorities locally

Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability to provide engaging, inclusive, and high-quality learning and assessment opportunities that meet diverse learning needs
  • Contribute to the development of curriculum delivery
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders
  • Ability to initiate innovation and promote change
  • Ability to plan effective and responsive curriculum
  • Ability to undertake partnership work and raise the College’s profile externally

Experience

  • Extensive experience of delivering ESOL classes (Essential)
  • Current/recent teaching experience (Essential)
  • Experience of English language teaching in a variety of contexts
  • Experience of delivering ESOL in a Further Education context
  • Experience of working with refugees and asylum seekers
  • Experience of delivering SQA ESOL units/courses
