Estates Net Zero Project Support Lead

National Highways has an excellent opportunity for an Estates Net Zero Project Support Lead to join our Energy and Sustainability team within the Business Services Directorate (BSD). National Highways has an ambitious Net Zero Plan, including achieving Net Zero by 2030 for our corporate emissions. A key pillar of this is decarbonising our estate, including offices, depots, outstations, and regional control centres through the removal of fossil fuels, generating onsite renewable electricity, delivering energy and utilities efficiencies, and improving our energy data.

Please note this role can be based from any of our UK offices; however, travel to regional offices to attend team meetings may be required.

About the Role

  • Drive measurable reduction in National Highways’ energy usage and carbon emissions by playing a key role in the successful delivery of the estate decarbonisation programme.
  • Support on the development of project scoping, business case development, and monthly forecasting, accruals, and reporting of project progress.
  • Work with our sustainability data officer to collect and analyse energy and utilities data to verify the efficacy of decarbonisation projects, using the findings to inform future projects and influence staff behaviours.
  • Supporting the Estates Net Zero Project Manager on project management workstreams relating to upgrading utility meters and utility management control systems within our buildings, such as the use of smart control systems.
  • Act as liaison between estate decarbonisation projects and other projects across the estate to ensure alignment of workstreams, and lead on internal stakeholder engagement across National Highways.

About You

  • Experience of working in project delivery with knowledge of CDM principles.
  • Previous experience managing and influencing internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience of managing, handling, and interpreting complex data sets.
  • Experience working in project delivery or energy and carbon management.
  • Suitable degree in a field related to energy, environment, sustainability, or the built estate.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
