Estimating Engineer
Lanarkshire | Up to £55,000
Price a genuinely varied mix of fabrication and machining work
Your improvements get implemented, not lost in management layers
Long-established manufacturer, currently investing, with strong group backing
THE CLIENT
A long-established engineering manufacturer serving customers across a wide range of industries. The business is part of a highly profitable group and is investing in its future, which makes it a secure place to build a career. The team is small and close-knit, and every role makes a visible difference.
This is a newly created position, adding capacity to the estimating function rather than filling a gap. It reports directly to the Managing Director. If you've been held back by layers of sign-off in a bigger business, that changes here.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Experience fit
Your summer at the bank plus your econometrics coursework map directly to the day-one responsibilities on this scheme — client modelling, market briefings, and deal support.
Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
THE ROLE
You'll own the estimate from enquiry to quote. You'll read customer drawings and specifications, plan the manufacturing method and work out fabrication and machining times, material and bought-in costs. Then you'll turn it into a price that wins work at the right margin. Turnaround matters, and so does getting it right.
You'll deal directly with material suppliers on pricing, lead times and technical requirements. You'll work closely with Procurement and Production so that won orders start quickly and accurately. Because no two enquiries are alike, the job stays interesting. You'll bring ideas to the estimating team, and with a direct line to the MD you'll see them put into practice.

ABOUT YOU
You'll be an estimator, estimating engineer or quotations engineer used to pricing manufactured work from drawings. That could be subcontract fabrication, machining, sheet metal, steelwork or something similar. You understand how parts and structures are made and can put sensible times and costs against them. You communicate clearly with customers and suppliers, and you've got the commercial sense to balance a competitive price with a healthy margin.
You're organised and computer literate, comfortable with Excel and an MRP or ERP system, and you like finding faster ways to estimate accurately.
