HEAD OF ESTIMATING – UTILITIES - Lancashire | Commercial

An exciting opportunity has come up for an experienced Head of Estimating to join a growing business operating across the UK utilities and infrastructure sector. The company works with some of the UK's leading blue-chip clients, delivering essential services across the clean water, wastewater, gas, multi-utilities and highways markets. This is a senior role where you'll take ownership of the estimating function, leading a national team and playing a key part in securing high-value contracts across the regulated water sector.

About the Role

As Head of Estimating, you'll be responsible for making sure the business is putting forward accurate, competitive and commercially viable bids across a range of large-scale projects and term service contracts. You'll lead the estimating team, oversee major tenders and work closely with procurement, commercial, operational teams and the wider supply chain. It's a hands-on leadership role, with plenty of scope to improve processes, develop the team and have a real influence on the way the estimating function operates.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
