Role of Estimator in the Property Industry

Description

  • Produce detailed cost estimates from drawings, specifications, and scope documents.
  • Carry out accurate take-offs for labour, materials, and equipment.
  • Obtain and assess quotations from suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Prepare tender submissions, budgets, cost plans, and bid documentation.
  • Support pre-construction activities, including risk analysis and value engineering.
  • Collaborate with commercial, design, production, and project teams to validate estimates.
  • Monitor project costs against estimates and contribute to post-project reviews.
  • Maintain and develop cost databases to reflect current market rates.
  • Review tender portals and identify new opportunities.
  • Negotiate with supply chain partners and support bid-writing activities.

Profile

To be successful in this role, you'll have:

  • At least 5 years' experience as an Estimator within the UK construction sector.
  • Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and cost drivers.
  • Experience preparing competitive tenders and commercial submissions.
  • Proficiency with estimating software such as CostX, Bluebeam, Buildertrend, and Excel.
  • The ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and organisational skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and stakeholder management experience.

Desirable

  • Degree qualified in Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Knowledge of modular or off-site construction methodologies.
  • Strong commercial awareness, cost control, and supplier negotiation skills.
  • A collaborative approach to working within multidisciplinary teams.
