Estimator / Construction Estimator – Civil Engineering

Derby, Derbyshire | £40,000–£60,000 DOE + Car + Bonus/Profit Share + Excellent Benefits | Hybrid Working

The Role

The Estimator / Construction Estimator job itself, where you will play a key role in securing profitable construction contracts through accurate estimating, competitive tendering and sound commercial judgement.

Reporting to the Commercial Director, you'll work closely with an experienced commercial and operational team on a varied portfolio of civil engineering, construction and infrastructure projects.

More specifically, you will:

  • Prepare accurate cost estimates, budgets and competitive tender submissions for civil engineering and construction projects.
  • Review tender enquiries, drawings, specifications and contract conditions to identify opportunities, risks and commercial considerations.
  • Undertake site visits to assess access, ground conditions, utilities and other factors influencing construction costs.
  • Obtain and evaluate subcontractor quotations, material prices and plant hire rates.
  • Produce detailed cost build-ups, activity rates, site overhead assessments and resourced programmes.
  • Liaise with clients, suppliers, subcontractors, Quantity Surveyors and Contracts Managers to develop competitive construction solutions.
  • Participate in tender reviews and support successful project handovers to operational teams.
  • Ensure appropriate allowances for health, safety, quality and project-specific requirements.
  • Support and mentor junior estimating colleagues where appropriate.

You will have

To be successful as Estimator / Civil Engineering Estimator, you will bring proven construction estimating experience, strong commercial awareness and a practical understanding of how construction projects are delivered.

You will ideally have:

  • Experience as an Estimator, Construction Estimator, Civil Engineering Estimator, Tendering Estimator or similar commercial construction professional.
  • A background in civil engineering, groundworks, infrastructure, reinforced concrete, utilities or general construction contracting.
  • Proven ability to prepare detailed construction estimates, cost plans and tender submissions.
  • Understanding of construction methodologies, specifications, contract conditions and commercial risk.
  • Experience evaluating subcontractor, supplier, material and plant quotations.
  • Strong numerical, analytical, communication and organisational skills.
  • A collaborative, proactive approach with the confidence to work independently and contribute to tender strategy.

Experience with a main contractor or specialist civil engineering subcontractor would be particularly welcome. Relevant qualifications are advantageous, although practical estimating expertise and commercial capability are equally valued.

  • £40,000–£60,000 basic salary, depending on experience.
