Estimator – Construction

Bournemouth/Poole, Dorset | £50K–£60K + £5K+ Car Allowance + Excellent Benefits

Estimating for a well-established and highly respected construction contractor based near Bournemouth/Poole, Dorset, delivering an impressive variety of building projects across the South of England.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Estimator / Construction Estimator / Building Estimator to join a stable, successful and people-focused business with a strong reputation for quality, repeat business and long-term client relationships.

You’ll work within an experienced pre-construction team pricing a diverse portfolio of new build, refurbishment, commercial, education, healthcare and heritage projects, with tenders ranging from small works through to circa £10m.

It’s a varied Estimator role offering interesting projects, a supportive team environment and genuine scope for continued professional development.

The Estimator job itself

The Estimator job itself, based from the Poole office and working closely with senior estimating and pre-construction colleagues.

You’ll take responsibility for preparing accurate, competitive tenders while developing a thorough understanding of project requirements, risks and commercial opportunities.

  • Processing and pricing enquiries from small works through to projects of circa £10m
  • Preparing detailed construction estimates and tender submissions
  • Working alongside the Bid Manager and Estimators to deliver complete tender returns
  • Using estimating software, currently Causeway, to produce detailed estimates
  • Reviewing drawings, specifications and tender documentation
  • Visiting prospective projects and clients to survey works and understand site requirements
  • Producing clear priced schedules for successful projects
  • Preparing and presenting tender bids for adjudication
  • Producing RFIs from tender information for clients and professional teams
  • Managing multiple tenders simultaneously and ensuring submissions meet deadlines
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues across pre-construction and project delivery

Projects are delivered through a variety of procurement methods including traditional, design & build and partnering, providing plenty of technical and commercial variety.

You will have

To be successful as Construction Estimator, you will ideally have previous estimating experience within building construction and be comfortable managing several tenders concurrently. More specifically:

  • Good construction industry knowledge and estimating experience
  • Strong commercial awareness and attention to detail
  • Ability to interpret 2D and 3D drawings
  • Good working knowledge of SMM7 and NRM
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to prioritise a busy tender workload
  • A proactive, dynamic and resourceful approach
  • Confidence working independently as well as within a team

An HNC or higher construction qualification would be advantageous but is not essential. Experience using Causeway estimating software, Microsoft Project or similar packages would also be beneficial.
