Estimator / Quantity Surveyor – Groundworks

Location: Blaydon, Newcastle
Employment type: Full-time
Salary: £50,000–£70,000 per annum
Reporting to: Commercial Manager

We’re looking for an Estimator / Quantity Surveyor with groundworks experience to join our team at Holystone Civil Engineering Ltd. Reporting to our Commercial Manager, you’ll manage estimating and commercial activities from tender through to final account. You’ll work closely with our site teams, clients and suppliers to prepare accurate pricing, control costs and support successful project delivery.

Key responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed estimates and competitive tenders for groundworks packages, including foundations, substructures, drainage, service trenches, external works and associated infrastructure.
  • Review drawings, specifications, ground investigation reports and bills of quantities to identify scope, risks and pricing requirements.
  • Carry out accurate quantity take-offs and build up rates for labour, plant, materials and subcontract works.
  • Obtain and compare supplier and subcontractor quotations.
  • Assess allowances for excavation, ground conditions, spoil disposal, backfill and compaction.
  • Prepare tender clarifications, exclusions and commercial handovers to the delivery team.
  • Produce interim valuations, applications for payment, cost reports and forecasts.
  • Identify, price and agree variations, maintaining clear records of changes and additional works.
  • Work closely with site management to track progress, productivity and costs throughout each project.
  • Manage subcontractor accounts and prepare and agree final accounts.

What we’re looking for

  • Previous estimating and/or quantity surveying experience with a groundworks contractor.
  • A sound understanding of foundations, drainage, substructures and external works.
  • The ability to interpret engineering drawings and measure groundworks packages accurately.
  • Strong knowledge of labour, plant and material costs, construction methods and site operations.
  • Good commercial judgement, negotiation skills and attention to detail.
  • Confidence using Excel and relevant estimating or measurement software.
  • The ability to manage multiple tenders and live projects.
  • A relevant qualification is desirable, although equivalent practical experience will be considered.
