THE BUSINESS

Based in Consett, our client is a well-established and forward-thinking engineering business specialising in the reverse engineering and refurbishment of rotating equipment. Supporting a wide range of industrial sectors, they provide expert servicing, repair, and overhaul solutions across all types of pumps.

With a strong reputation for technical excellence and reliability, the company is currently experiencing sustained growth and is at an exciting stage in its development. As a result, an exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Estimating Engineer to join a well-established engineering and manufacturing business based in Consett, County Durham.

Working closely with the Sales Director and production team, you will be responsible for preparing accurate and commercially competitive quotations for the manufacture, repair and refurbishment of precision engineered components.

THE ROLE

This is a hands-on estimating role where your understanding of machining processes will be key. You'll be expected to assess engineering drawings and repair specifications, determine realistic machining times, source materials and subcontract services, and produce detailed quotations for customers. A practical appreciation of how components are manufactured and the time involved in machining them is essential to ensure quotations are both accurate and competitive.

  • Producing detailed cost estimates using the company's ERP system.
  • Reviewing engineering drawings, sketches and repair specifications to determine manufacturing and repair requirements.
  • Estimating machining times, labour, materials and subcontract costs.
  • Sourcing material prices and obtaining quotations from external suppliers.
  • Preparing professional customer quotations for manufacturing and repair work.
  • Maintaining accurate estimating records and supporting continuous improvements within the estimating process.
  • Working closely with production and engineering teams to ensure estimates are technically accurate and commercially viable.

THE PERSON

We're looking for an Estimating Engineer with a strong mechanical engineering or machining background who understands manufacturing processes and can confidently estimate the time and cost involved in producing precision engineered components.

You may already have experience in an estimating role or be looking to move into estimating from a machining, manufacturing engineering or production engineering environment. Most importantly, you'll have the technical knowledge to accurately assess machining requirements and build reliable quotations for customers.

Ideally, you will have:

  • A background in mechanical engineering, machining or precision manufacturing.
  • Experience estimating machining times and manufacturing costs within a machine shop environment.
  • The ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications and repair documentation.
  • Experience preparing quotations or cost estimates for engineering or manufacturing projects.
  • Good working knowledge of ERP/MRP systems together with Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Excellent attention to detail with a methodical and organised approach.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across engineering, production and commercial teams.
  • A commitment to delivering high standards of quality, accuracy and customer service.
