Nexus Europe SAS | Brown & Brown Group

About Nexus Europe:

Nexus Europe SAS is the French subsidiary of Nexus Underwriting Limited, a Managing General Agent (MGA) in the United Kingdom and part of the Brown & Brown Group, one of the largest insurance broking groups in the United States.

You will join our European Casualty team, an established, entrepreneurial, and dynamic department who underwrite General Liability and Professional Indemnity risks across the European Union, with approximately 80% of our business originating from France. We specialise in underwriting business focused on specialist, complex, niche and emerging risks that do not fit conventional insurance models or tick boxes. We have been underwriting these risks successfully, profitably, and sustainably for more than 10 years and have achieved growth year on year.

The Opportunity:

We are looking for an intellectually curious and innovative European Casualty Underwriter with a can-do attitude to join our team in London.

This is not a rigidly defined role. We are looking for the right person to complement our existing team — someone who combines strong technical underwriting ability with commercial judgement, curiosity, humility and a willingness to challenge conventional thinking.

Our business is built around underwriting risks that are often unusual, technically complex or emerging. We believe that “there are no bad risks, only bad premiums” — and our role as underwriters is to understand the risk, identify where the potential exposures lie and determine the right terms and price.

Examples of risks we underwrite include:

  • Environmental risks
  • Specialist rail risks
  • Quarrying and mining risks
  • Specialist contractors, including deep-sea divers, drilling contractors and offshore wind farm maintenance, anti-avalanche equipment testing & blasting companies to name a few
  • Defence-related risks
  • Organic food businesses
  • Renewable energy
  • Testing of materials destined for European embassies in high-risk countries
  • New technologies and inventions
  • Other specialist, niche and non-standard risks

Key Responsibilities:

Underwriting:

  • Underwrite European casualty risks, principally General Liability and Professional Indemnity, across a broad range of risk levels and sectors.
  • Assess technically complex, unusual and key-account risks, including risks requiring referral to the underwriting team.
  • Analyse exposures, understand the underlying business and identify potential areas of accumulation or loss.
  • Apply sound underwriting judgement to determine appropriate pricing, terms, conditions, limits, deductibles and coverage.
  • Balance competitiveness with long-term profitability, with particular focus on maintaining a positive claims-to-premium ratio.
  • Adhere to underwriting authorities, rules, procedures, guidelines and applicable tariff scales.
  • Apply the underwriting strategies established by the Director of European Third-Party Liability while considering the specific characteristics of the French market.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Our Team & Culture:

We are deliberately a bijou and highly collaborative team that operates on mutual trust within the Brown & Brown group. We intentionally grew by word of mouth primarily and have grown into one of the most important European teams in the group. We are looking to continue our significant growth into the next few years while also exploring the boundaries of the types of risks are able to successfully write. We have all the “big company advantages” while having the dynamism, entrepreneurial spirit and can-do attitude of a successful start-up scaling up.

We value:

  • Respect — everyone deserves respect, regardless of their position or seniority.
  • Humility — we do not believe anyone has all the answers, or that any job is above us
  • Quiet confidence — we value people who know what they are capable of without needing to prove it.
  • Curiosity — we want people who genuinely want to understand how things work.
  • Critical thinking — we encourage people to challenge assumptions, their own ideas and think for themselves.
  • Creativity — unusual risks require imaginative solutions.
  • Mutual support — we help one another, regardless of whether something technically falls within our job description.
  • Accountability — mistakes happen; what matters is taking responsibility, learning from them and fixing them.
  • Communication — we value being available to our brokers, clients and colleagues.
  • Ambition — we want to build a sustainable and successful business, without sacrificing our values.

Our underwriting is 100% human. We do not use AI or automated underwriting systems to make underwriting decisions. We believe that specialist underwriting requires experience, judgement, curiosity and conversation.

Experience & Technical Skills:

Essential:

  • Professional working proficiency in both French and English.
  • Strong knowledge of General Liability and/or Professional Indemnity underwriting.
  • Good understanding of the Lloyd’s and London insurance markets.
  • Experience underwriting risks within the European Union.
  • Strong analytical and risk-assessment skills.
  • Commercial awareness and an understanding of the relationship between risk, pricing and profitability.
  • Ability to negotiate effectively with brokers and other stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Experience of specialist, niche, complex or emerging risks would be highly advantageous.

We are more interested in judgement, attitude, values, potential and character than in a particular academic background. There is no requirement to have attended a particular university or followed a conventional career path.
