Overview

The European Controller is the senior accounting leader for Hexagon’s Autonomous Solutions Business Area across Europe. The role provides accounting leadership across a multi-country and multi-entity environment, with responsibility for financial close and reporting, statutory compliance, audits, internal controls, and the quality and consistency of accounting operations.

A key priority is to strengthen the European controlling model and support the integration of Septentrio into the Autonomous Solutions finance organization. The position partners closely with local management, divisional Finance Business Partners, Group functions, and finance teams across Europe while protecting legal entity integrity and ensuring alignment with IFRS and Hexagon Group requirements.

The ideal candidate combines strong technical accounting knowledge with practical leadership, sound judgement, and the ability to work both strategically and hands-on. Experience in a multinational, matrixed organization and the ability to standardize processes across different countries, entities, and systems are essential.

The Location: Hexagon is a global company with offices around the world. This position is based in the Aberdeen, United Kingdom.

Responsibilities

As our European Controller, you would be responsible for:

  • Lead accounting and controlling activities for the Autonomous Solutions Business Area across Europe, including general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, fixed assets, payroll accounting, and intercompany activities.
  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes for the European entities in scope, ensuring accurate, complete, and timely reporting into Hexagon Group systems.
  • Ensure journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, provisions, allocations, and adjustments are completed and reviewed in line with Group timelines and quality standards.
  • Oversee intercompany accounting, settlement, and issue resolution across European and international Hexagon entities.
  • Provide clear accounting ownership and governance where multiple divisions operate through shared legal entities.
  • Produce accurate IFRS-based financial reporting and ensure alignment with Hexagon Group accounting policies and reporting requirements.
  • Ensure local statutory accounts and regulatory filings are completed accurately and on time across the countries and entities in scope.
  • Lead preparation for internal and external audits, coordinating with local auditors, Group Audit, Business Area leadership, and relevant finance teams.
  • Coordinate tax compliance with local finance teams, external advisors, and Hexagon Group Tax, including corporate income tax, VAT, transfer pricing, and other local requirements.
  • Maintain strong internal controls, process documentation, and audit evidence, and drive timely remediation of identified issues.
  • Act as the senior accounting partner for Septentrio and support its continued integration into the Autonomous Solutions finance organization.
  • Build effective working relationships with the Belgium-based team through regular onsite presence and close collaboration.
  • Align accounting policies, close routines, reporting, controls, intercompany processes, and governance with Hexagon and Autonomous Solutions standards.
  • Support broader integration, transformation, and legal entity initiatives across Europe, including acquisitions, reorganizations, and system changes when required.
  • Lead, develop, and support accounting and controlling teams across Europe, creating clear ownership and accountability.
  • Set expectations, provide coaching, strengthen technical capability, and build effective backup and succession coverage.
  • Promote collaboration across countries and divisions while maintaining consistent standards and transparent escalation.
  • Drive a culture of integrity, continuous improvement, and proactive communication.
  • Oversee accounting processes across the ERP and reporting systems used by the European entities, including SAP, Infor SyteLine, and OneStream where applicable.
  • Drive standardization of close, reconciliation, intercompany, reporting, and control processes across Europe.
  • Partner with IT, Group Finance, and local teams on system enhancements, integrations, data quality, and process automation.
  • Reduce manual work and strengthen scalable, well-controlled workflows that support the future European operating model.
  • Serve as the primary accounting contact for European entity leaders and collaborate closely with Finance Business Partners, FP&A, Tax, Treasury, Legal, Internal Controls, and the global Business Area finance organization.
  • Provide practical accounting guidance for contracts, investments, business initiatives, and operational decisions.
  • Ensure local business needs are supported without compromising legal entity accuracy, compliance, transparency, or Group policy.
  • Identify and escalate accounting, control, statutory, tax, and resourcing risks early, with clear facts and recommended actions.

Qualifications

Must-Have:

  • Recognized professional accounting qualification, such as ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting or controlling experience, including significant leadership responsibility.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge under IFRS and experience with statutory reporting in a European environment.
  • Experience working in multinational, multi-entity, and matrixed organizations.
  • Strong ERP and consolidation systems experience. SAP and OneStream experience are highly desirable; Infor SyteLine experience is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead distributed teams and influence stakeholders across countries and functions.
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong analytical, organizational, communication, and leadership capability.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality work under tight reporting deadlines.
  • Fluent professional English.
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly within Europe, particularly to Belgium.
