I'm working with a leading household brand who are currently looking for a European Tax and Compliance Manager. This is a newly created role reporting into a Regional Finance Director.
Your new role
Key responsibilities for the role will include:
Tax Compliance: Multi-Jurisdiction
- Own the tax compliance calendar across UK, France, Spain, Sweden, and Iceland, ensuring all filing and payment deadlines are met
- Manage and develop a team of in-country VAT specialists, providing day-to-day direction, technical guidance, and performance oversight.
- Review VAT % applied to each new product, perform a quarterly review of all the products that we sell and provide training to buying staff. Minimise VAT liabilities and compliance issues.
- Review and approve VAT returns, corporate tax workings, and statutory filings across all five jurisdictions
- Draft, implement, and maintain tax compliance policies and procedures that are consistent across the region while reflecting local requirements
- Act as the primary point of contact for tax authorities in each country, managing enquiries and audits professionally and proactively
- Liaise with external tax advisers on various tax matters
- Support the Senior Accounting Officer (SAO) process in the UK, including maintaining appropriate tax controls and documentation
- Monitor legislative and regulatory changes across all five jurisdictions and assess their impact on group operations

- Lead compliance with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) obligations across all applicable European markets
- Own reporting and registration requirements under the EPR for Packaging scheme in all countries
- Work with Buying, and Operations to gather accurate packaging data for EPR reporting, and drive improvements in data quality
- Track developments under the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and prepare for upcoming obligations as the regulation comes into force
- Prepare and submit all required EPR returns on time, maintaining audit-ready documentation
- Act as the internal subject matter expert on packaging sustainability regulation, briefing senior stakeholders on obligations and risks
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Drive system enhancements, discovery and delivery of applications that help with our overall tax compliance and improving our tax controls
- Partner with the other EU countries to ensure local compliance needs are understood and resourced
- Collaborate with Legal on contractual and regulatory tax matters
- Support the Finance Director and Payroll/AP teams on tax-related payroll matters including employment taxes where relevant
- Provide clear, concise updates to the Regional Finance Director on the compliance position, risks, and regulatory changes
What you'll need to succeed
Required Skills, Abilities, and Certifications
- Qualified tax professional (CTA, ACA, ACCA, or equivalent) or qualified by experience in a multi-jurisdictional tax role
- Experience managing indirect tax (VAT) compliance across multiple European jurisdictions
- Experience managing or coordinating a team
- Strong knowledge of UK tax compliance, including VAT, corporation tax, and the SAO regime
- Ability to draft tax policies and communicate complex tax matters to non-specialists
- Very organised, with experience managing multiple compliance deadlines across jurisdictions simultaneously
- Strong knowledge in excel
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with internal stakeholders and external authorities
- Ability to work in a fast paced environment
- Familiarity with PPWR or equivalent EU/UK sustainability regulation
- Experience working in a large retail, wholesale, or FMCG environment is an asset
- Additional European language skills (French, Spanish, or Swedish) is an asset
