EV Charger Diagnostics Engineer – Electronics, Firmware & Communications
About the Role
Every EV charger will, at some point, develop a fault, and the hard part is knowing whether the root cause sits in the hardware, the firmware, the communications layer (OCPP), or the vehicle itself. This role exists to answer that question at a technical level, down to board and firmware level where needed, not just triaging a support ticket.
You will sit at the centre of the technical team, testing new charger hardware and firmware ahead of release, investigating returned units at component level to identify root cause, and providing deep technical escalation support when Customer Service reaches the limit of what they can resolve. This is hands-on, hardware and firmware level diagnostic work, not account or service management.
This is a newly created role, established to give the technical team the specialist engineering depth it currently lacks. You will work closely with the Technical Director, who designed and developed the charger from the ground up, giving you direct access to the person who knows the product best.

About the Company
Our client designs and supplies smart EV charging solutions for both domestic and commercial customers, with a strong focus on the electrical wholesale market. Their product range includes home EV chargers, commercial charging units, and an accompanying smart charging app and platform, alongside a growing demand flexibility offering that allows customers to optimise how and when their chargers draw power. There are already tens of thousands of their chargers installed and in active use across the UK.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose complex faults on EV chargers at hardware, firmware and communications level, including PCB-level investigation where required
- Work with OCPP and related charger communications protocols to identify and resolve connectivity and back-office issues
- Test new charger hardware and firmware ahead of release
- Investigate returned units at component level to identify root cause, feeding findings back into product improvement
- Act as the deep technical escalation point for Customer Service on issues beyond standard fault-finding
- Work closely with the Technical Director to support ongoing product development and reliability

About You
- Hands-on experience diagnosing EV charger faults at hardware, firmware or communications (OCPP) level, not general electrical work or customer-facing technical support
- Comfortable working with PCBs, firmware, and charger communications protocols
- A degree or formal training in Electrical or Electronics Engineering
- A methodical, root-cause approach to fault-finding rather than symptom management
- Able to explain complex technical issues clearly to non-technical colleagues
Details
- Full time, 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday
- Reports to the Technical Director
- 25 days holiday plus Bank Holidays, with an additional day per year of service (up to 25 days)
