About 121
121 Group is an international events business that enables investors to connect with credible growth stage natural resource projects for capital raising meetings. The event model connects buyside and sell side through pre-screened investment meetings supported by industry rich conference content and a weekly industry news platform The Assay that covers trends in metals and mining investment.
121 sits within the Energy Transition division of Hyve’s alongside sister brand Mining Indaba that is the largest industry conference and exhibition held annually on the African continent. Together the 121 and MI brands solidify Hyve’s industry leading position supporting stakeholders across the metals and mining sector.
A bit about the role
The Event Director of 121 is the leader of both the event and the event’s sales team. The Event Director has ultimate accountability for all aspects of the brand’s performance, and manages the P&L in accordance with the brand strategy. The Event Director has responsibilities in four areas: leading the core event sales team day to day, managing key stakeholder relationships, understanding the industry, and delivering the event. The Event Director will spend up to 60% of their time being a sales leader and up to 30% of their time managing key internal and external stakeholder relationships, with the remainder of their time spent on understanding the industry and delivering the event.

The Event Director reports directly to the Portfolio Director and directly manages a dedicated, global team of sales managers who sell the event. The Event Director also works with content, marketing, operations and customer success functions located within the region who provide all non-sales services in line with Events Best Practice.
As part of your job, you’ll be:
- Leading 121 on strategy, planning, delivery, industry positioning & ensuring financial budgets are achieved. This includes:
- Leading weekly progress meetings & reporting up to the Senior Leadership Team.
- Being accountable for the event’s overall performance targets, including the P+L. Working side by side with the Portfolio Head of Growth to ensure that all revenue targets are hit & trading updates are accurate & timely.
- Work with Portfolio Director, Portfolio Heads of and Hyve’s strategy team to develop the event’s value proposition and strategy, identifying opportunities to innovate within the event and ensuring that the event is fresh, relevant, and seen within the industry as a "must-attend-event" year after year.
- Delivering internal strategy work through collaboration with the Portfolio Director & Portfolio Heads of Ops, Growth & Marketing
- Build and maintain key relationships vital for the success of the event. These relationships are likely to include (but not limited to) brokers, government departments, trade associations, media, and bellwether accounts.
- Managing the investor registration & client engagement processes.
- Coaching the global team consistently to be goal oriented & working to their potential.
- Contributing thoughtfully to the overall strategy as part of the Event Leadership team & being a role model the company culture & values.
- Displaying thoroughness & detail orientation about customer experience from prospect through to event execution.
- Being constantly curious & staying informed on industry trends & engaging with the larger event industry.
- Understand (and monitor changes in) the industry, its value chain, the needs of its participants, and the needs of customers, sponsors and investors. Ensure that this understanding feeds into the event’s value proposition, strategy, plan, and the resulting sales strategy, plan, key messages, and tactics.

Here’s what we’re looking for from you:
- A seasoned professional with multiple years proven experience in event management & project delivery.
- Solid experience in the mining, investment and/or energy transition industries
- A confident manager of multi £m budgets & forecasts.
- Able to demonstrate laser focus on delivering financial success & great customer experiences again & again.
- An experienced, empathetic leader of multi-disciplined teams both on & off projects & a natural collaborator with matrix teams
- An optimistic, low ego & self-aware driver of change who is focussed on making human connections.
- Strongly able to engage & influence at a senior level & deliver difficult messages to all levels constructively.
- Organized & detail oriented - the detail always matters.
- Agile & able to multi-task – change happens every day & you will need to be comfortable pivoting to & prioritize different projects.
- Smart & quick learner who is highly curious & comfortable in a fast-paced, high growth, entrepreneurial environment.
