STRATEGIC BUSINESS UNIT DESCRIPTION

Risk Management is led by Senior Executive Vice-President and Chief Risk Officer and is accountable on matters relating to the independent oversight of the management of risks inherent to CIBC’s activities. These risks include but are not limited to ensuring that effective processes are in place for the identification, management, measurement, monitoring and control of operational, reputation and legal, strategic, regulatory, market, credit, investment and liquidity risk, collectively “CIBC Risk”, incurred by CIBC’s retail and wholesale businesses, infrastructure and corporate governance groups.

JOB PURPOSE

As a Director, Corporate Function Compliance, you’ll be joining CIBC’s Compliance and Global Regulatory Affairs team within Risk Management, and reporting to the Senior Director, Corporate Function Compliance. You’ll provide strategic leadership and direction to a team of Compliance professionals, ensuring that CIBC’s 1st and 2nd Line groups under your purview are effectively managing regulatory compliance risk in alignment with the Bank’s risk appetite and regulator expectations. You’ll oversee the execution of Regulatory Compliance Management (RCM) activities, coordinate regulatory landscape analysis, and ensure alignment with industry standards and the Bank’s Regulatory Compliance Management Policy. You will be responsible for leading the oversight activities of a group of CFC officers specializing in quantitative risk regulatory areas (such as Enterprise Risk, Credit Risk and ECL, Stress Testing, Regulatory Reporting) and corporate function areas (such as Legal, Related Party Transactions, Corporate Governance, Corporate Security, Whistleblower). Your scope of oversight will mainly include global regulations across CIBC’s global footprint (Europe, Asia Pacific and other regions). Your role will involve developing relationships across business units, providing compliance advisory services, and optimizing processes to drive operational excellence. You’ll also be responsible for coaching, mentoring, and managing a team of Compliance Officers, fostering a positive work environment, and championing CIBC’s mission, vision, and values.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Strategic Leadership and Oversight - Lead and manage a team of Compliance Officers, providing direction, coaching, and monitoring of activities to ensure alignment with CIBC’s Regulatory Compliance Management framework.
  • Regulatory Landscape Analysis - Stay current on changes in relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards. Analyze the impact of regulatory changes and adjust compliance strategies accordingly.
  • Risk Assessment and Management - Review complex legal and regulatory documentation, translate requirements into plain language, and perform risk assessments in accordance with established methodologies.
  • Process Optimization - Provide insights and best practices for optimizing regulatory compliance processes, focusing on operational excellence and mitigation strategies.
  • Relationship Building - Develop and maintain strong relationships with Oversight Functions, Line of Business leaders, and other teams within Compliance and Global Regulatory Affairs to ensure effective oversight and mitigation of regulatory compliance risk.
  • Team Development - Foster a positive work environment, provide development opportunities, manage performance, and ensure compliance with policies and controls.

CROSS-FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

  • Frequent proactive contact with business and regional management to identify and discuss business and regulatory compliance issues and needs and to provide consistent and time-sensitive advice.
  • Regular contact with Compliance partners across all regions, and with members of other internal control and Functional Groups, in order to promote a consistent approach and the development and execution of an effective and integrated control environment.

COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS/RESPONSIBILITIES

AUTHORITIES/DECISION RIGHTS

  • As a key contributor to the business unit, this job has the authority to recommend changes to business processes in order to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness.
  • As a manager of people, this job has the authority to assign tasks to employees within their span of control, select individuals for hire, assess individual performance, make employee compensation decisions and take disciplinary measures up to and including termination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

You’re an experienced compliance leader. You bring 10-15 years of progressive business experience in compliance, risk management, legal, audit, or governance within the financial services industry, mainly in global regulatory requirements specific to quantitative risk areas such as Enterprise Risk, Credit Risk and ECL, Stress Testing, Regulatory Reporting) and corporate function areas (such as Legal, Related Party Transactions, Corporate Governance, Corporate Security, Whistleblower).

You have deep regulatory expertise. You possess extensive knowledge of regulatory compliance management, risk assessment, and control frameworks relevant to financial institutions.

You’re a strategic thinker. Your strong analytical, critical thinking, and business acumen enable you to develop creative solutions for complex problems.

You’re a relationship builder. You excel at establishing and maintaining healthy internal and external partnerships, and you communicate effectively to develop trust and influence outcomes.

You lead and inspire teams. You have proven leadership and influencing skills, with experience coaching, mentoring, and managing professional teams.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This role operates within a normal office environment.

You’ll have the flexibility to manage your work activities within a hybrid work arrangement where you’ll spend 2-3 days per week on-site, while other days will be remote.
