About us

Linklaters is a global law firm, providing legal services in 20 countries and through 30 offices.

Linklaters is a people business. Being best in class in the eyes of our clients means that our people must be exceptional.

We look not only for brilliant minds, but for people who will thrive in our environment: people who love working collaboratively and demonstrate the innovative, efficient, agile, entrepreneurial, and responsible mind-set we aim to bring to every interaction.

Ours is an environment of outperformance. We achieve this not with targets and incentives, but by fostering a positive, supportive, fair, and open atmosphere.

We respect and value difference but insist on inclusivity. We celebrate all aspects of diversity and challenge any form of bias. This is vital to our ability to work as one team, with a common goal.

The Role

As an Expatriate & Employment Tax Assistant, you will play a key role in supporting the delivery of high-quality tax compliance and advisory services for internationally mobile employees and cross-border remote workers. Working closely with colleagues, assignees and external stakeholders, you will assist throughout the assignment lifecycle, ensuring tax obligations are met accurately and efficiently. This is an excellent opportunity to develop specialist expertise in expatriate and employment tax, while leveraging technology and AI tools to drive process improvements and enhance service delivery.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Support the delivery of expatriate and employment tax services for international assignments and cross-border remote working arrangements, ensuring a high standard of client service and compliance.
  • Act as a key point of contact for UK tax compliance queries, providing guidance on tax returns, PAYE tax codes and payroll-related tax matters for international assignees.
  • Manage and maintain global tax payment and refund schedules, ensuring records are accurate, up to date and well documented.
  • Coordinate activities across the assignment lifecycle, including tracking outstanding information requests, obtaining questionnaires and supporting documentation, and facilitating the timely completion of HMRC requirements.
  • Review cross-border remote working requests, researching relevant tax legislation and employment tax implications across multiple jurisdictions and escalating potential risks where appropriate.
  • Assist with assignment cost projections and tax-related research to support mobility planning and identify potential tax efficiencies for employees and the business.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across HR, Payroll, Mobility and external advisers to resolve tax-related matters and deliver a seamless experience for internationally mobile employees.
  • Support UK compliance reporting activities, including maintaining Short-Term Business Visitor records, coordinating documentation from employees and assisting with HMRC submissions, while leveraging technology and AI tools to improve processes and reporting accuracy.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
