The Vacancy
Overview
We are seeking an experienced and reliable Yardperson to join our busy steel engineering and fabrication team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe handling, storage, loading, and movement of steel materials throughout our yard and production facility. Previous experience operating a Combi-lift forklift and handling long steel sections are desirable.
This role plays a critical part in maintaining efficient yard operations, supporting production schedules, and ensuring materials are available when required.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate Combi-lift and other material handling equipment safely and efficiently.
- Load and unload steel deliveries from lorries and transport vehicles.
- Move raw materials and finished products between the yard, fabrication workshops, and storage areas.
- Organise and maintain stock locations to ensure efficient material retrieval.
- Verify incoming deliveries against purchase orders and delivery notes.
- Prepare materials and orders for dispatch in accordance with customer requirements.
- Assist with stock control, stock counts, and inventory management.
- Ensure all materials are stored safely and securely.
- Conduct daily equipment checks and report any defects or maintenance requirements.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping throughout the yard and storage areas.
- Work closely with production, fabrication, and logistics teams to support operational requirements.
- Comply with all company Health & Safety policies and procedures.
Essential Requirements
- Proven experience in a Yardperson, stores, or materials handling role within the steel, engineering, fabrication, or manufacturing industry.
- Valid Combi-lift licence or substantial Forklift operating experience.
- Experience handling structural steel, plate, tube, and long-length materials.
- Good understanding of safe loading and unloading practices.
- Ability to read delivery notes, material schedules, and dispatch documentation.
- Strong awareness of Health & Safety regulations.
- Good communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physically fit and capable of working in an outdoor environment.

Desirable Requirements
- Combi-lift forklift licence.
- Overhead crane operating experience.
- Telehandler licence.
- Banksman or slinger/signaller certification.
- CSCS or other construction-related qualifications.
