About the Role

An opportunity has arisen in Histopathology, as part of Derbyshire Pathology, for an Expert Biomedical Scientist (BMS), with proven experience in laboratory leadership who has a specialist interest in being the training lead.

Derbyshire Pathology was formed on the 1st July 2018, of the laboratories at Chesterfield Royal Hospital and Royal Derby Hospital, with Queens Hospital Burton joining in October 2021. The Histopathology Department is based on the site of Royal Derby Hospital, and operates an extended day and week shift system (please contact for details). There is an appetite for continuing laboratory transformation, and we are implementing the full digitisation of the Histopathology Service.

Derby has been at the forefront of BMS dissection since 2005, and as such, has a long established and successful in house training and competency programme, pioneering extended biomedical scientist dissection and BMS reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Experience of line management and team leadership are required for this role, as you will be expected to actively manage and develop staff in your section, and to liaise with the Histology Manager and other Expert BMS's, to deliver a high quality, efficient, and unified Histology laboratory service.

  • Leading within Histology, therefore familiarisation, understanding and experience of UKAS standards is essential; Health & Safety requirements; NEQAS, audit and training/education experience is also required. Familiarisation of LIMS implementation is desirable.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
