AWard Training, the partner company of Autism Somerset CIC, is an approved provider of the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disabilities and Autism. Drawing on more than 25 years of experience in neurodiversity, the organization delivers training that is quality assured and fully compliant with the Health and Care Act and CQC regulations. AWard Training’s core team of facilitators and experts with lived experience creates engaging learning environments that go beyond standard mandatory training. The approach focuses on curiosity, positive change, and celebrating good practice, while giving participants the space to ask questions, listen, and take meaningful action. The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is the government’s preferred and recommended standard for health and social care staff, highlighting the importance of high-quality training in learning disability and autism.
Role Description
This is a role based in Burnham-On-Sea but a national role for an Expert with Lived Experience of Learning Disabilities. The expert will co-facilitate training sessions, sharing personal experiences to help health and social care staff understand the realities of living with learning disabilities. Day-to-day tasks include contributing to lesson delivery, participating in discussions, supporting interactive activities, and helping trainers connect theoretical content with real-life situations. The role also involves working with the training team to review materials for accessibility and relevance, providing feedback on course content, and engaging respectfully with participants’ questions. The expert will be expected to uphold AWard Training’s values of inclusion, dignity, and curiosity while maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality.

Qualifications
- Direct lived experience of learning disabilities, and willingness to share personal experiences in a structured training environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to speak clearly, listen actively, and engage diverse groups of staff.
- Ability to work collaboratively with trainers and other experts, follow agreed training plans, and contribute to a supportive facilitation team.
- Comfort with public speaking or group facilitation, and openness to receiving guidance and constructive feedback.
- Understanding of, or interest in, health and social care settings, safeguarding, and person-centred approaches (training and support can be provided).
- Reliability in attending scheduled sessions across the UK, with good time management and organisational skills.
- Commitment to inclusion, equality, and non-discriminatory practice, respecting the dignity and confidentiality of all participants.
- Any prior experience in training, advocacy, peer support, or involvement roles is beneficial but not essential.
