External Communications Officer - Maternity Cover

Location: Edinburgh or Glasgow, hybrid working arrangement
Salary: £44,400-£49,600, depending on skills and experience
Contract: 9 month fixed-term contract | Full-time

Are you an experienced communications professional with strong media relations skills and a talent for creating engaging content?

We're recruiting an External Communications Officer on behalf of an established organisation delivering essential services to communities across the UK.

Joining a busy communications team, you'll help protect the organisation's reputation, promote its achievements and keep external audiences informed. This varied opportunity combines proactive PR, campaign delivery and content creation with reactive media handling.

The role

  • Handle day-to-day press office and external communications enquiries.
  • Support media responses during incidents and emergency situations.
  • Identify positive news stories and promote organisational achievements.
  • Create clear, accessible content about operational projects and service updates.
  • Develop engaging social media content and deliver communications campaigns.
  • Build effective relationships with internal colleagues and external stakeholders.

About you

  • You'll have experience in media relations, public relations or external communications, with excellent writing and proofreading skills and strong attention to detail.
  • You'll be confident managing competing priorities, building relationships and communicating clearly in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience creating social media content and a good working knowledge of digital channels and Microsoft Office 365 are also important.
  • Experience within utilities, infrastructure or a similar environment would be beneficial, although candidates with relevant transferable experience are encouraged to apply.
  • An understanding of internal communications would also be useful.
  • A full UK driving licence is essential due to travel requirements.
  • You must also be comfortable participating in an out-of-hours rota to support communications during incidents and emergencies.
