About the opportunity:
As an External Trustee, you will play a vital part in strengthening our governance and shaping the organisation’s strategic direction.
As we look ahead to our next strategic chapter, we're seeking a passionate and talented individual to help guide Cardiff Students' Union through an exciting period of opportunity and growth.
Drawing on your professional expertise, you will provide constructive challenge that supports robust decision-making, strong leadership and effective oversight. Working collaboratively with fellow trustees and our executive team you will help ensure that we operate with integrity, transparency and accountability. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is motivated by positive change and committed to helping the organisation make well-informed decisions.

Person specification:
- Experience serving as a trustee of a charity or not-for-profit organisation, with an understanding of effective governance, collective decision-making and the responsibilities of charitable trustees.
- Experience in a legal, governance or regulatory role, including within the higher education sector, with the ability to provide strategic insight and constructive challenge.
- Skilled at identifying operational, financial, reputational, and compliance risks, and ensuring proportionate controls.
- Understanding of charity–subsidiary structures, fiduciary duties, conflicts of interest, and regulatory boundaries (e.g., Charity Commission expectations).
- An awareness of effective Board Governance and a strong commitment to the Nolan Principles.
- The ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels including charity trustees, executives, stakeholders and regulators.
- Ability to shape long-term direction, evaluate new opportunities, and challenge assumptions with data-driven thinking.
- The ability to constructively question ideas, think strategically and make informed decisions.
- An individual who is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion who actively seeks to remove barriers to equality.
- Commitment to mission-aligned decision-making and safeguarding the charity’s reputation.
