Support the Estates & Facilities team
Support the Estates & Facilities team in maintaining a safe, well-maintained and effective environment across Prospect Hospice. The postholder will undertake a range of practical facilities and maintenance activities. The role provides an opportunity to develop practical skills and experience across a range of facilities activities.
What you'll do at work
- Complete the relevant apprenticeship programme and associated learning requirements
- Attend training, study and assessment activities as required
- Apply learning from the apprenticeship programme to practical work within Prospect Hospice
- Maintain appropriate records of learning and development
- Take responsibility for progressing towards the required apprenticeship standards and qualifications
- Participate actively in supervision, feedback and development discussions
- Develop an increasing level of independence and responsibility as skills and experience develop
- Support the Facilities Manager and Facilities Technician in delivering the planned preventative maintenance programme
- Assist with routine inspections, checks and maintenance activities across the hospice and retail sites
- Undertake tasks appropriate to the apprentice's level of training, competence and experience
- Assist with the identification and reporting of defects, faults and emerging maintenance issues
- Support the maintenance of accurate records of completed work
- Learn how buildings, equipment and facilities are maintained and managed effectively
- Assist with responding to day-to-day maintenance requests and facilities issues
- Undertake basic repairs and maintenance tasks where appropriately trained and authorised
- Report faults and defects that cannot safely or appropriately be resolved
- Assist the Facilities Technician and Facilities Manager with more complex maintenance activities
- Help to ensure that facilities-related issues are dealt with promptly and effectively
- Maintain a professional and helpful approach when working in areas used by patients, families, staff, volunteers and visitors
- Support the general upkeep and presentation of buildings, facilities and external areas
- Assist with basic tasks relating to furniture, fixtures, fittings and equipment
- Support the movement, installation or removal of equipment and other items where appropriate
- Assist with deliveries, storage and the organisation of facilities-related materials
- Support seasonal and ad hoc facilities activities as required
- Assist with preparing areas for events, activities or operational requirements where appropriate
- Work safely at all times and in accordance with Prospect Hospice policies and procedures
- Follow appropriate risk assessments, safe systems of work and instructions
- Use tools, equipment and materials safely and appropriately
- Report hazards, defects, incidents and near misses promptly
- Support the completion of routine checks and inspections as directed
- Never undertake work beyond the apprentice's level of training, competence or authorisation
- Participate in relevant health and safety and other mandatory training
- Support the Facilities Manager and Facilities Technician when external contractors are working on site
- Assist with preparing areas for contractor visits and works
- Follow appropriate site safety and access arrangements
- Report any concerns regarding contractor activity or site conditions

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Plan the sequence of work required to carry out routine property maintenance operations.
- Identify and select the appropriate materials and components for property maintenance tasks, ensuring these are compliant with relevant regulatory requirements and manufacturer's specifications.
- Comply with statutory health and safety regulations and requirements.
- Comply with risk assessments, and organise the workplace, to safeguard themselves and the property.
- Comply with key regulatory and legislative requirements, including building regulations.
- Uses safe working practices when carrying out property maintenance tasks including the use of PPE, signage, barriers, access equipment and ensuring work area is prepared and reinstated.
- Select, and use work tools and equipment for property maintenance tasks, applying all safeguards, and ensuring the correct functioning of equipment.
- Safely isolate and secure electrical or electronic supplies prior to performing property maintenance operations.
- Apply and implement routine emergency system checks, testing and routine maintenance, identifying and reporting faults as required.
- Perform maintenance and repairs to plumbing systems, including fault identification, safe isolation of supply, replacing components and clearing blockages.
- Perform maintenance and repairs to external drainage systems, including clearing blockages and replacing components.
- Perform maintenance and repairs to environmental and energy management systems, including fault identification, safe isolation of supply, replacing components.
- Use carpentry and joinery skills to perform repairs to windows, doors and glazing units, and their associated fittings.
- Perform repairs to plastered surfaces, including surface preparation, fixing and mixing materials and compounds.
- Use painting and decorating skills to prepare surfaces for decoration, apply paint using brushes and rollers, and complete sealing activities using gun appliances.
- Perform tiling repairs, including setting out, surface preparation and cutting around obstacles.
- Perform flooring repairs, including setting out, surface preparation and cutting around obstacles.
- Perform planned, responsive or temporary repairs to buildings or their immediate surroundings, attending to minor defects within either masonry, roofing, fencing or railing, groundwork or landscaping.
- Select and use technical literature and other sources of information and data to address property maintenance problems.
- Record and report information, using digital and written techniques.
- Inspect own work, ensuring it is delivered to the given specifications.
- Comply with environmental regulations and procedures. Segregate resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
- Use and adapt communication methods for different situations and when, working with colleagues and stakeholders, using industry terminology as appropriate.
- Provide customer feedback whilst maintaining customer service.
- Escalates issues beyond their level of competence and authority.

Property Maintenance Operative Level 2
- On the job will take place at the place of work 4 days per week
- Off the job will take place at New College Swindon 1 day per week
Essential qualifications
- GCSE in:
- English (grade 4 or equivalent)
- Mathematics (grade 4 or equivalent)
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
Other requirements
- MUST be aged 18 or over due to healthcare setting (and insurance purposes)
- Must be willing to undertake a DBS Check
- Minimum Grade 4 English and maths GCSE
- Must be able to drive and have access to a vehicle
