Role Information
Job Title: Facilities Assistant
Reports to: Facilities Supervisor
Accountable to: Executive Corporate Director
Contracted Hours: 31.8 per week, rotating shift pattern (evening and weekends included)
Salary: £23,809 + £2000 Shift Allowance premium (per annum)
Role Summary
To deliver a professional, efficient, and responsive Facilities and Compliance service across the Hospice estate and retail outlets, ensuring statutory compliance and providing both planned maintenance and reactive repair support.
The postholder will provide facilities support across the Hospice and The Living Well Centre. Support to Trading Company locations may be required on an ad hoc basis to meet operational needs.
Reporting to the Facilities Supervisor, the role requires flexibility to work across all Hospice and Trading Company sites as required, supporting the safe, compliant, and effective operation of the organisation's facilities and services.
This role works in shift on a rota basis covering seven days a per week between the hours of 7:00am and 10:00pm. Due to the nature of the role the shift pattern will include weekend and bank holidays.
Main Duties
Facilities, Compliance and Maintenance
- Support the Facilities Supervisor in maintaining the compliance, safety, functionality, and presentation of all Hospice and retail premises.
- Complete planned and reactive maintenance tasks, recording all actions and outcomes within the maintenance management system.
- Ensure Hospice and retail premises are opened, secured, locked, and alarmed as required, maintaining the safety, security, and operational readiness of all sites.
- Carry out and record routine compliance checks and inspections, ensuring adherence to statutory requirements and regulatory standards, including those set by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), Health & Safety Executive (HSE), and other relevant bodies.
- Work in accordance with all relevant legislation and regulations, including Health & Safety, Fire Safety, COSHH, LOLER, PUWER, and Legionella requirements.
- Maintain accurate maintenance, compliance, and inspection records.

Repairs, Building Maintenance and Projects
- Undertake a wide range of general maintenance duties, including minor plumbing, decorating, joinery, building, and basic electrical works (subject to training and competency).
- Support and participate in estate improvement projects, including shop fit-outs, room reconfigurations, refurbishment works, and other minor building projects.
- Assist with room moves, furniture relocation, deep cleans, and operational changes across the estate.
Grounds and External Estate Management
- Maintain external buildings, grounds, children's play areas, pathways, and car parks to a high standard.
- Support grounds maintenance activities, including grass cutting, leaf clearance, and general landscaping tasks.
- Carry out seasonal maintenance activities, including gritting, snow and ice clearance, and ensuring safe access to all sites.
- Maintain drainage systems, gullies, gutters, and water flow systems.
- Undertake jet washing and cleaning of external surfaces as required.
- Ensure external signage remains clean, safe, and in good condition.
Stores, Deliveries and Waste Management
- Receive, store, and distribute deliveries and supplies across departments and sites.
- Maintain stock levels of facilities-related consumables, including batteries, bulbs, and similar items.
- Ensure waste is disposed of safely and appropriately, maintaining clean and organised refuse areas.
- Remove waste and materials from site as required.
Team Support and General Duties
- Support volunteers involved in facilities activities.
- Provide facilities support to the Trading Company and retail locations as required.
- Participate in training and continuous professional development to maintain knowledge, skills, and competence in facilities management.
- Act in accordance with Hospice policies and procedures, including disciplinary and grievance procedures.
- Undertake occasional out-of-hours work to support operational and maintenance requirements.
