Keeping our trains moving starts long before they reach the platform.
Behind every reliable journey is a team making sure the equipment that supports our trains is ready to perform. As part of our Plant Maintenance and Facilities team at Heaton TrainCare Centre, you'll look after the machinery and systems that keep our engineering operation running safely and efficiently.
This is a role where your skills make a real difference every day. Whether you're diagnosing a fault, carrying out planned maintenance or responding to an unexpected breakdown, you'll help keep our depot operating smoothly so our engineering teams can do what they do best. No two days are the same, and you'll have plenty of opportunities to broaden your skills as the team continues to develop.
What You'll Be Doing
You'll maintain, inspect and repair a wide range of plant equipment across the TrainCare Centre, helping to ensure it's safe, reliable and ready to use.
Day to day, you'll:
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance and servicing of depot plant and equipment.
- Diagnose faults and complete repairs on mechanical and electrical systems.
- Investigate recurring issues through fault finding and root cause analysis.
- Respond quickly to equipment breakdowns to minimise disruption.
- Work safely, following engineering standards and company procedures at all times.
- Work closely with colleagues across the depot to help achieve daily operational targets.
- Support continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to improve reliability and performance.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
