Facilities Manager – Hemel Hempstead
Hours: 37 hours per week, Monday–Friday, 8:30am–5:00pm
Working arrangement: Fully onsite
Job Description
Looking for a Facilities Manager role where you can genuinely take ownership of a site, make improvements happen and see the impact of your work?
At Thermo Fisher Scientific, our work has a purpose: enabling our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. In Hemel Hempstead, we’re looking for a rounded, proactive Facilities Manager who can create and maintain the high-quality operating environment that enables our people to deliver that mission. Our Hemel Hempstead facility is a client fronting demonstration Laboratory which is critical in our UK and EMEA operations
This isn’t a role where you will sit above a large engineering team or manage an extensive multi-site portfolio. It’s a hands-on, site-focused leadership opportunity for someone who enjoys being close to the operation, building relationships, establishing and running site events and taking ownership when something needs to happen. The position is dedicated to our approximately 3,000m² Hemel Hempstead site, with four direct reports across warehouse and reception.
What will you do?
You will take responsibility for ensuring the effective operation of the site’s building systems, infrastructure and services, combining strategic planning with day-to-day operational leadership.
You will oversee critical facility systems and work closely with contracted services partners such as security, janitorial and grounds maintenance. Although you won’t be expected to personally fix technical systems, you will need the knowledge and confidence to understand issues, coordinate the right contractors and take ownership through to resolution. Preventative maintenance will be particularly important – looking after the site’s assets and addressing risks before they become failures.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

We are looking for someone with strong facilities expertise who is equally comfortable with people, stakeholders and operational problem-solving.
