We are looking for a skilled, compassionate and motivated Family Relationship Coordinator to join our Family Help service in Children’s Services. This is an exciting opportunity to lead and support Family Group Decision Making across Torbay, helping children, young people and families find safe, sustainable solutions that build on family strengths and networks.
In this role, you will coordinate and promote Family Group Decision Making meetings, supervise a small team of Family Relationship Practitioners, and hold a small complex caseload of your own. You will work closely with children, families and multi-agency professionals to ensure plans are child-centred, timely and outcome-focused, while championing high standards of practice across the service.
What you’ll be doing
- Lead the delivery and development of Family Group Decision Making across Torbay.
- Line manage and support up to 5 Family Relationship Practitioners embedded in Child in Need teams.
- Hold and manage a small complex caseload, directly facilitating Family Group Decision Making meetings.
- Work with children, young people, parents, carers and extended family members to develop effective family-led plans.
- Build strong working relationships with social care, health, police, voluntary sector and other partners.
- Promote safeguarding, children’s rights and anti-oppressive practice in all aspects of the role.
- Use feedback, data and performance information to evaluate impact and drive service improvement.
- Provide training, guidance and advocacy to promote understanding and uptake of Family Group Decision Making.

You should be an effective communicator with strong organisational skills, emotional resilience, and the ability to motivate and support others.
Experience of supervision or team leadership, performance monitoring, case recording systems, and working within safeguarding frameworks will be important.
Knowledge of children’s rights, anti-oppressive practice and family-led approaches will be essential.
You will need GCSE/O Level Grade C or equivalent in English and Maths, and the ability to complete the required Family Group Conference Coordinator training within the specified timescales.
A relevant qualification in social work, teaching, mediation or a related field would be advantageous, as would previous experience or formal training in Family Group Decision Making.
Additional information
This post is based at Tor Hill House and is eligible for hybrid working. The role requires travel across the Bay and, where needed, wider regional or national travel. The successful candidate will need to work flexibly, including occasional unsociable hours, and will be subject to the appropriate safer recruitment and Disclosure and Barring Service checks.

Essential:
- Proven problem solving skills – the ability to identify causes, make objective and informed judgements that demonstrates emotional resilience and balance.
- Ability to appraise and motivate staff in a way that ensures compliance with policies but also enables individuals to develop.
- Ability to plan, organise and use resources effectively and efficiently.
- Experience working with Children’s rights and anti-oppressive practice.
- Effective influencing, negotiating and advocacy skills.
- This role requires the ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence and fluency in English.
Knowledge
Essential:
- A working knowledge of Children’s Rights and anti-oppressive practices.
- Knowledge and understanding of the full range of activities delivered by the Authority and partners in relation to children, young people and families.
- Ability to demonstrate awareness and understanding of equal opportunities.
- Ability to prioritise and coordinate the work of others.
Experience & Qualifications
Essential:
- GCSE / O level Grade C or equivalent in English and Maths.
- Ability to complete the Essential Skills and Values Training (Three Day) for FGC Coordinators within x12 months of appointment.
- Ability to complete an Accredited FGC Coordinator programme within two years of appointment.
- Significant experience of working with children, young people, parents and carers.
- Evidence of having delivered improved outcomes and impact for children and young people.
