Research Fellows, who comprise 40% of the academic staff in the Department of Biology, are essential to the department. To assist with the success of applications to prestigious fellowship programs in the UK and abroad, we provide a Fellowship Mentorship Programme. Strong senior Independent Research Fellowship (IRF) applications to join the Department of Biology are the goal of the mentorship project.
Educational Resources
The Department Of Biology Will Assign Successful Applicants To Prominent Academic Mentors. In Addition To Guaranteeing That Support Letters And Ideal Costings Are Completed Within Funder Deadlines, The Mentor Will Offer Guidance And Assistance To Bolster Fellowship Applications. Early Career Researchers With Outstanding Performance Histories Are Encouraged To Apply To The Program For Funding Schemes Offered By The UK And Other Countries, Including:
- BBSRC Discovery Fellowships
- NERC Independent Research Fellowships
- MRC Early Career Awards
- Royal Society University Research Fellowships
- Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowships
- Wellcome Trust Career Development Fellowships
- ERC Starting Grant

Who Should Apply
Early career biologists in all fields of biology are encouraged to apply, especially those straddling multidisciplinary borders with the physical, social, or other life sciences. These researchers will have access to Oxford’s exceptional research environment.
You must participate in this procedure if you would like the Department to assist you in applying for any of the fellowships mentioned above. Please be aware that this does not imply that you will be hired or that you will be accepted into the Department through any of these fellowships.
Expectations
Selected candidates are paired with a mentor, a prominent researcher in the department, who will offer guidance and assistance. The mentorship program’s objectives are to:
- Facilitate the transition from a group leader and independent researcher
- Determine how the Department can assist and support you most effectively.
- Encourage advancement to a permanent role or another fellowship.
The Department of Biology is committed to maintaining and advancing ethical work practices for female scientists, and it has been recognized for these efforts with an Athena Swan Award. An interview is the last stage of the application procedure in many fellowship programs. We practice mock interviews and have discovered that doing so improves success rates.

When To Apply
Mentorship applications are advertised twice per year, with closing dates on 31 March and 31 October every year.

Candidates should choose which deadline best fits their needs based on the fellowships they want to apply for. Depending on the fellowship you are interested in applying for, the table below indicates when to apply for mentorship.
Based on your research interests, select the most relevant research Section from the Department’s various research Sections (themes) for your mentoring proposal. Learn more about the Department’s Sections.
Selection criteria
- Scientific excellence
- Potential readiness and competitiveness for schemes in the program
- Potential synergy or complementarity with Section and Department
- Availability of facilities for the proposed work
Next steps
Five weeks following the deadline, we want to inform all candidates of their status and the identity of their mentor.
The mentor will be their primary source of contact going forward. The mentor will provide applicants advice on every facet of preparing their applications and will also set up a schedule for the following stages.
The Following Will Be Required Of The Candidates
- At least six weeks prior to the planned fellowship date, they should confirm their intention to submit an application.
- Complete the application in its entirety no later than three weeks prior to the funder's deadline.
- Until the application is filed, be accessible to respond to inquiries on budgeting and support requirements that require internal approvals.
