Role Overview

The Fetal Monitoring Midwife provides expert clinical leadership in fetal surveillance and assessment to improve birth outcomes and reduce avoidable harm. The role focuses on embedding safe, evidence-based practice in antenatal and intrapartum fetal monitoring across all maternity settings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Spend approximately 80% of their time in clinical practice, providing visible leadership, real-time support, education, and assurance.
  • Work daily on the antenatal, labour ward, maternity assessment unit (MAU), and the birth centre alongside clinical staff.
  • Educate all levels of midwifery, obstetric staff, and students about physiological CTG interpretation and intermittent auscultation.
  • Contribute to the ongoing implementation and development of physiological cardiotocography (CTGs) interpretation.
  • Work to develop staff awareness in recognising factors that could contribute to misinterpretation of CTGs and impair clinical decision making.
  • Ensure staff are continually assessing fetal well-being in the context of the woman’s health, pregnancy, gestational age, stage of labour, intrapartum risk factor and providing a safe, robust, and consistent approach to fetal monitoring.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
