Department Overview

As a multi-skilled Field Operations Engineer, you’ll operate and maintain the TETRA Base Stations, Microwave Transmission, Enhancer equipment & Customer Control Room elements of the Airwave Network within agreed SLA’s to maintain service to our customers.

Engineers are provided with the training and equipment necessary to perform network maintenance. It is the engineer's responsibility to maintain and refresh these skills.

Job Description

Ideal Location: Candidates should ideally reside in Newport, Chepstow, or Gloucestershire region. This position necessitates frequent travel across South Wales and the Mid West, alongside a willingness to travel beyond these regions when business needs dictate.

Key Accountabilities

  • Respond to Network Incidents

    • NOC Alerts: The Network Operations Centre (NOC) will alert the engineer when they are the closest engineer with the required skills to resolve a network incident.
    • Working Hours: Core operating hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. However, candidates must remain flexible, as occasional work outside of these standard hours may be required to support business operations.
    • On-Call Rota: Active participation in a 1 in 4 call-out rota is an essential duty of this role. Full compliance is required to guarantee continuous 24/7 geographical coverage for the maintenance and reliability of the Airwave Network.
  • Airwave Base Sites

    • Perform planned maintenance, visual inspections, and functional checks.
    • Provide 1st and 2nd line fault diagnosis.
    • Carry out project work, including site upgrades and equipment installations.
  • Microwave Transmission Operation and Maintenance

    • Maintain and operate Airwave Network transmission equipment. Proactively troubleshoot and resolve faults across MUX/DEMUX systems, iPasso and Aviat microwave radios, and integrated 3rd-party equipment.
    • Provide 1st and 2nd line fault diagnosis. You will handle initial problem identification and basic fixes, and collaborate with the wider technical team to investigate and resolve more complex issues.

  • Rigging & Climbing Activities

    • Climbing and rigging are essential core duties of this role. The engineer is required to perform climbing tasks and carry out the following activities:
      • TETRA Antenna replacement.
      • Feeder/connector testing and replacement.
      • ODU replacement and re-panning.
      • Line of Sight (LoS) triage.
      • Structural inspections.
  • Problem Solving and Planning

    • Take personal ownership and proactively schedule and manage your daily/weekly workload and where required plan with the scheduling team for any activities that need action, including:
      • Reactive network faults.
      • Antenna faults.
      • Line of sight issues.
      • Planning for site access and daily fault rectification (including consumables and spares management).
      • Resolving service-affecting faults within Service Level Agreements (SLAs), completing timely inspection regimes, reporting exceptions, and executing follow-up work for rectification.

Basic Requirements

Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required

Candidates must have experience in or a strong understanding of:

  • RF networks
  • Transmission networks
  • Working at Height (including Advanced Climbing)
  • Antenna and Outdoor Unit (ODU) replacement
  • Feeder termination
  • Anritsu Site Master/Spectrum Analyzer
  • 18th Edition electrical regulations (desirable)
  • IP Networking (desirable)

Core Competencies

  • Driving License: Possession of a full, valid UK driving license is essential for travel across the region.
  • Working at Height: Demonstrated proficiency and confidence working at height, including on towers, monopoles, and rooftops.
  • Teamwork & Autonomy: Capable of working independently or collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Travel Flexibility: Willingness to travel throughout the region, with the flexibility to cover other regions when required.
