Overview

We require an experienced Network Field Engineer to support the PSBA End-of-Life Programme.

The programme involves replacing pre-configured end-of-life routers and switches at customer sites. The engineer will be responsible primarily for the physical installation, cabling, commissioning support and verification of Cisco and Juniper equipment. Configuration and migration activities may be carried out by remote Network or Project Engineers.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities

  • Attend customer sites to support network refresh and migration activities.
  • Remove end-of-life routers, switches and associated equipment.
  • Install, rack, cable and power pre-configured Cisco and Juniper network equipment.
  • Complete like-for-like equipment replacements or installations in accordance with the project design.
  • Connect copper, fibre, console and management interfaces.
  • Establish console or remote-management connectivity for remote Network Engineers.
  • Support 3rd Line and Project Engineers during implementation, testing and migration activities.
  • Verify power, interface status, physical connectivity and equipment health.
  • Assist with service checks following the migration or replacement.
  • Troubleshoot basic hardware, cabling, optics and connectivity issues.
  • Follow implementation plans, method of procedure documents, rack layouts and network diagrams.
  • Record asset details, including models, serial numbers and installed locations.
  • Decommission and remove legacy equipment in accordance with asset-recovery procedures.
  • Complete installation records, test results and project sign-off documentation.
  • Escalate technical or service-impacting issues through the agreed project process.
  • Participate in out-of-hours change windows where required.

Qualifications

Essential experience and skills

  • Experience installing and replacing enterprise routers and switches.
  • Practical experience with Cisco routing and switching equipment.
  • Practical experience with Juniper routing and switching equipment.
  • Understanding of copper and fibre network connectivity.
  • Experience with network optics, patching, console connections and remote access.
  • Ability to rack, cable, power and perform physical checks on network equipment.
  • Ability to interpret implementation plans, network diagrams and method of procedure documentation.
  • Good hardware and connectivity troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience working in enterprise, public-sector or telecommunications environments.
  • Accurate asset-recording and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently while taking technical direction from remote engineers.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Willingness to travel to customer sites throughout the assigned Welsh region.

Desirable qualifications and experience

  • Cisco CCNA or equivalent practical experience.
  • Juniper JNCIA or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience supporting large-scale router and switch refresh programmes.
  • Knowledge of WAN, LAN, routing and switching environments.
  • Experience working on public-sector network infrastructure.
  • Previous experience of PSBA or BT-managed network environments.
  • Relevant security or site-access clearance.

Working arrangements

  • Field-based role covering customer sites in Wales.
  • The precise geographical area requires confirmation.
  • Travel between multiple locations will be required.
  • Out-of-hours, evening or weekend change windows may be required.
