Field Service Engineer - Production Machinery & Automation

Location

Home Based - West Midlands / Western UK
UK Travel + Regular Staying Away

About the Role

If you're used to walking into a production facility, getting underneath a complex machine fault and staying with it until the equipment is running properly again, this could be for you.

We're looking for an experienced Field Service Engineer to support complex production machinery and automated equipment at major UK manufacturing sites, with a particular focus on advanced manufacturing and aerospace.

This isn't a high-volume service role and we're not looking for someone maintaining general factory facilities or utilities.

You'll be working directly on the machinery and automated equipment used within production, often spending several days on one customer site diagnosing faults, carrying out repairs, completing planned maintenance and making improvements.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

Responsibilities

  • Fault finding on complex production machinery and automated equipment
  • Electrical and mechanical diagnosis and repair
  • Working with PLC-controlled machinery, drives, motors, sensors and control systems
  • Planned and preventative maintenance
  • Machine modifications, upgrades and improvement work
  • Installation and commissioning
  • Working from electrical and mechanical drawings
  • Identifying the root cause of recurring equipment problems
  • Supporting customers on longer-term engineering projects

Requirements

You'll already be an experienced Field Service Engineer, Service Engineer, Commissioning Engineer or Production Equipment Engineer with a background in complex industrial machinery.

Ideally, you'll have worked on equipment within aerospace manufacturing, although we'd also consider strong backgrounds in automotive or other advanced manufacturing environments.

Most importantly, you'll need experience servicing, repairing and fault finding on production machinery, rather than simply maintaining a manufacturing site.

You'll probably have experience with some of the following:

  • Automated production machinery
  • PLC-controlled equipment
  • Robotics and automation
  • Motors, drives and control systems
  • Complex mechanical systems
  • Installation and commissioning
  • Machine upgrades and modifications
  • Electrical and mechanical fault finding

You'll need to be comfortable working independently, dealing directly with customers and travelling throughout the UK, including regular overnight stays.

We're looking for an engineer, not a parts changer.

If you're the person customers rely on when a complicated piece of production equipment stops working and the obvious fix hasn't worked, we'd like to hear from you.
