Field Service Engineer (EC&I)


About the Role

Howden Turbo UK is seeking a skilled Field Service Engineer (EC&I) to join our global Field Service team. This is a hands-on, technically challenging role focused on delivering expert engineering support worldwide. You will be responsible for the overhaul, maintenance, commissioning, and optimisation of steam turbines and associated control systems.

As the face of Howden on customer sites, you will:

  • Deliver high-quality technical support, ensuring safe and efficient execution
  • Build strong, trusted relationships with operators, technicians, and project teams
  • Work in complex industrial environments, solving challenges in real-time
  • Provide worldwide field support, often with short-notice travel

This is a home-based role requiring extensive international travel.

Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site EC&I technical support for:
    • Steam turbine overhaul, repair, maintenance, upgrades, fault-finding, and commissioning
  • Ensure safe, professional, and high-standard execution—right first time, on time
  • Produce clear, detailed Site Reports, detailing actions, risks, and improvement opportunities
  • Supervise customer or company technicians on-site, upholding safe working practices
  • Complete risk assessments and adhere to health & safety procedures
  • Mobilise projects effectively and facilitate on-site communication with stakeholders
  • Represent Howden professionally, fostering strong customer relationships as a trusted technical partner

Requirements

Essential

  • Strong EC&I background with hands-on experience in:
    • PLC/HMI programming/troubleshooting, including:
      • Rockwell: Studio 5000, RSLogix 5000, Logix 500, FactoryTalk
      • Siemens: PCS7, Step 7, WinCC, TIA Portal
      • Schneider: Control Expert / SCADA Expert
      • Woodward 505 governors & Basler DECS 200/250 AVRs
  • Familiarity with:
    • Industrial communication protocols: Modbus (RS485/TCP), Profibus, Profinet, ControlNet
    • Power generation systems (5–30MW), covering:
      • Governor/excitation systems
      • Droop/isochronous control
      • Active/reactive power & pressure regulation
  • Knowledge of steam turbine maintenance and repair
  • Ability to supervise complex on-site activities (installation, commissioning, maintenance)
  • Strong customer-facing skills with a talent for building effective working relationships
  • Excellent written communication, capable of producing:
    • Risk assessments
    • Site reports
    • Root Cause Analyses (RCAs)
    • Method statements
    • Scopes of work
  • Experience working internationally, including in non-English-speaking environments
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Full UK driving licence
