Field Service Engineer

The Field Service Engineer will be responsible for installing, commissioning, repairing, and maintaining ABB variable speed drives (VSDs) across customer sites within the water & wastewater industry.

This position includes participation in an out-of-hours call-out rota.

Package:

  • £50,000 to £60,000 Starting Salary
  • Paid Overtime
  • Company Van, Specialist Tools and Test Equipment
  • Company Bonus

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install and commission variable speed drives (VSDs), including mechanical mounting, power/control cabling, and panel work.
  • Configure drive parameters, run motor ID tests, complete application programming, and carry out functional testing.
  • Diagnose and repair faulty drives, identifying root causes, and replacing components or full units.
  • Perform planned maintenance: inspections, fan/capacitor changes, firmware updates.
  • Carry out wiring modifications and update electrical schematics to reflect as-built changes.
  • Complete service reports, commissioning records, and job documentation accurately.
  • Participate in the call-out rota for breakdowns and urgent customer needs.
  • Lead on-site engineers, allocate tasks, oversee quality and safety, and mentor junior staff.

  • Proven experience installing, commissioning, and maintaining variable speed drives (VSDs).
  • Hands-on experience with ABB drives (ACS380, ACS580, ACS880 or similar).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and wiring diagrams.
  • Competent with control panel wiring modifications.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Desirable Skills & Experience:

  • NVQ Level 3 / City & Guilds or equivalent electrical qualification.
  • BS 7671 18th Edition.
  • Experience with pumping systems, ideally within the UK water industry.
