Field Service Specialist (Mechanical, Electrical and Controls)
Full time, permanent | UK based with extensive UK and international travel | 5+ years of experience
The opportunity
We are growing, not standing still. Our order book is building ahead of a busy period, and we are hiring now so we are ready before the work lands, not after. This role is broader than a standard service engineer position, which is why we call it Specialist: you will deliver the engineering, run your jobs like small projects, and develop the customer relationships that bring the next order in. If you want a role where the technical work, the responsibility and the commercial side all belong to you, and where no two weeks look the same, read on.
About the company
ASC Process Systems Ltd is a UK engineering business that designs, installs, commissions and services process equipment and industrial control systems for customers across the UK and worldwide. We operate a safety-first culture in high-risk environments, and so do most of our customers; our engineers are trusted to uphold it alone on sites around the world. We design, manufacture and deliver full engineering products, solutions and services from advanced thermal processing equipment to bespoke niche projects for the aerospace, defence, nuclear industries, as well as R&D and more.
About the role
You will work across three engineering disciplines: mechanical, electrical and controls. One visit might be a mechanical strip down and rebuild, the next fault finding a control panel, the next commissioning a PLC controlled system, and often all three on the same trip. Travel is extensive and central to the job: expect to spend 70 to 80 percent of your time away, across the UK and internationally, frequently working alone for extended periods on customer sites around the world.
Around the engineering sit two responsibilities that make this a Specialist role. First, project management: you will plan and run your own jobs end to end, from pre visit preparation, parts and logistics, through site execution, subcontractor and customer coordination, to testing, documentation and handover, keeping the schedule and keeping the office and customer informed. Second, sales: you are the person our customers see most, so you will actively develop the relationship, identify service contracts, upgrades, retrofits and spares opportunities, contribute to quotations and follow them through. Twelve months in, success looks like this: you run overseas visits without supervision, your projects land on time and fully documented, customers ask for you by name, and you have real revenue on the board that exists because of you.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
