Job Summary
The Service Technician will work as part of the SPX Cooling Technologies Service Team, supporting the cleaning, maintenance, inspection and repair of cooling towers and associated equipment across customer sites throughout the UK.
This is a practical, hands-on role suited to someone who already has experience working in a site-based, construction, maintenance, mechanical or industrial environment and can demonstrate a strong work ethic. Previous cooling tower or electrical experience is not required. Initial duties will include cooling tower cleaning, jet washing, basic maintenance activities and supporting experienced technicians on site.
Full training will be provided to develop cooling tower knowledge, inspection techniques and general service skills. We expect the successful person to already understand the basics of working safely and professionally on customer sites. As experience and competence develops, there will be opportunities to undertake additional technical training, including electrical training where appropriate.
The role requires regular travel, overnight stays, early starts, overtime and occasional weekend working depending on customer and business requirements. The successful person must be comfortable with physically demanding work, outdoor environments and the day-to-day expectations of working as part of a site team.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Carry out cooling tower cleaning and jet washing activities.
- Support experienced technicians with servicing, maintenance, repairs and installations, taking an active role in the site team.
- Learn the main components and operation of cooling towers and associated equipment.
- Assist with cooling tower inspections and basic condition assessments.
- Use tools, access equipment and PPE safely and correctly.
- Follow RAMS, site procedures and SPX Health & Safety requirements at all times.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping, productivity and professional behaviour on customer sites.
- Take responsibility for looking after tools, equipment and PPE and assist with materials required for site work.
- Complete relevant training and competency programmes.
- Develop technical skills over time, with opportunities for further mechanical and electrical training.
- Represent SPX professionally when working at customer sites and travel throughout the UK and occasionally overseas as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong work ethic with a practical, hands-on attitude and willingness to get involved in all aspects of site work.
- Previous experience working on customer, construction, maintenance, mechanical or industrial sites.
- Able to work safely at height and within confined spaces following appropriate training.
- Good teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to follow the lead of experienced technicians and contribute positively to the crew.
- Proven reliability, good timekeeping and a professional approach to work.
- Able to follow instructions, procedures and Health & Safety requirements.
- Comfortable with early starts, travel, overtime, overnight stays and changes to site schedules.
- Practical experience using hand tools, site equipment or carrying out basic mechanical or maintenance tasks is strongly preferred.
- Previous cooling tower experience is beneficial but is not required; cooling tower knowledge will be developed within the role.
- Electrical experience or qualifications are not required; future electrical training may form part of the individual development pathway.
Education and Experience
- Full UK driving licence.
- Previous site-based experience in construction, mechanical work, maintenance, utilities, facilities, industrial services or a similar practical environment is required.
- Cooling tower and electrical experience are not essential; the role is designed to develop these technical skills over time.
- Relevant site, mechanical or technical qualifications are beneficial but not essential where suitable practical experience can be demonstrated.
- Full role-specific training will be provided.
- Willingness to undertake future technical training and qualifications as required.

This role is intended for someone who already understands the expectations of working on site and can demonstrate the right attitude, reliability and work ethic. SPX will build the cooling tower knowledge and technical capability from that foundation, with further mechanical or electrical training provided where appropriate to the individual and business needs.
