About us
UCL Mechanical Engineering has been pioneering the development of engineering education, having taught the core discipline for over 170 years. UCL was home to the UK's first ever Professor of the Mechanical Principles of Engineering, Eaton Hodgkinson, in 1847. It was also where Sir Alexander Blackie William Kennedy introduced organized laboratory practicals in university education training; a world-leading educational innovation at the time.
Today our students are taught core engineering disciplines and supervised in individual and group research projects by academics that are recognised research world-leaders in their fields.
In the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) over 90% of the department's research was judged "world leading" or "internationally excellent".
At UCL Mechanical Engineering, we develop and apply core competencies to produce world-class research into a wider range of engineering challenges than most would imagine. Amongst many other avenues we are:

- Designing the greenest engines and novel sustainable fuels
- Studying the flow of red blood cells in channels thinner than a human hair
- Using 'lighter than air' building materials to develop the solar power stations of the future.

- Designing propulsion systems for advanced multihull ships.
About the role
The Finance Administrator will be responsible for administering all financial transactions within the department, ensuring they are processed promptly, accurately, and in accordance with UCL's Financial Regulations.
Additionally, the role includes assisting in the administration of data for research grant funding proposals by providing necessary figures and statistics.
The Finance Administrator will support financial decision-making by generating reports and statistics and will serve as the first point of contact for general financial enquiries.

About you
We would be delighted to receive applications from candidates with a degree or equivalent relevant qualification, or substantial experience in general financial administration. You will have knowledge of financial processes and regulations and, ideally, experience of working with financial processes in a university or research environment.
You will have excellent IT skills, including advanced knowledge of Excel and the ability to understand and use numerical formulae, alongside a good all-round knowledge of Microsoft Office. A high level of numeracy and strong analytical skills will enable you to understand and interpret financial information and prepare, interpret and present accurate financial reports.
You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills and a strong customer focus, with the ability to liaise and interact confidently with a range of people both within and outside the University. You will be organised and able to manage your own workload effectively, prioritising tasks and meeting tight operational deadlines.
We are looking for someone with proven experience of providing effective financial support and maintaining and reviewing administrative and finance systems. You will be able to work accurately and with attention to detail, maintain confidentiality and remain effective when working under pressure.
You will also demonstrate a proactive and appropriate approach to responding to the needs of colleagues, staff, students and partners, together with a commitment to advancing equality, diversity and inclusion.
