West Midlands Employers

Transform Finance at West Midlands Employers

Many organisations talk about transformation – and few people genuinely get the opportunity to lead it.

At West Midlands Employers, we’re looking for a qualified accountant to join us on a 6 month fixed term contract – who will work directly alongside our Chief Finance Officer and help shape a finance function that's more efficient, resilient and sustainable for the future. You’ll play a leading role in our finance improvement journey.

You'll be hands on with visible impact, streamlining processes, improving systems, strengthening controls and enhancing reporting, whilst ensuring our business as usual finance activities continue to run smoothly.

If you're naturally curious, enjoy challenging existing ways of working and want to leave a lasting legacy, this could be the opportunity you've been looking for.

Why join West Midlands Employers?

West Midlands Employers is the Regional Employers' Organisation for the 31 local authorities across the West Midlands.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

We're a member led, local authority owned organisation with a turnover of almost £4M, delivering HR, organisational development, leadership and resourcing services across the public sector.

We're ambitious about the future of our finance function.

We're investing in a programme of improvements designed to simplify processes, optimise systems, reduce manual work and strengthen the quality of management information.

No two days will look quite the same. One day you might be producing management accounts, journals and reconciliations. The next, you'll be redesigning processes, reducing spreadsheet dependency, improving month end reporting and helping shape how finance operates for years to come.

You'll thrive here if you:

  • Enjoy improving processes and finding smarter ways of working
  • Are equally comfortable in the detail and the bigger picture
  • Have experience of finance transformation or service improvement
  • Build trusted relationships quickly
  • Take ownership and follow things through
  • Bring positive energy, pragmatism and commercial thinking
