Step by Step is a charity that passionately supports young people facing challenging times. Our unique approach, providing accommodation, personal development opportunities, and specialist support, helps young people identify and achieve their aspirations. Each year, we work with over 1,300 young people aged 11–25. Our team plays a vital role in empowering them and preventing homelessness. We are a positive, dynamic, and professional team, committed to helping young people reach their full potential. Incorporated in 1989, Step by Step has a long history of supporting young people. What You’ll Be Doing
Are you looking to start an exciting career in finance? We have a fantastic opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our busy and dynamic Finance Team as an Accounting Apprentice.
This role offers the perfect combination of practical experience and professional development, allowing you to earn while you learn. Working alongside experienced finance professionals, you will gain valuable insight into how a finance department operates and develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to build a successful career in accounting. You will support the team with a variety of day-to-day financial tasks.
Your responsibilities may include:
- Processing invoices
- Assisting with payments
- Maintaining accurate financial records
- Reconciling accounts
- Supporting month-end activities
- Helping to prepare financial information and reports
You will be supported throughout your apprenticeship by qualified accountants who are committed to helping you succeed. They will provide guidance, coaching, and practical learning opportunities, ensuring you develop both technically and professionally. You will gain exposure to a wide range of accounting activities that will help you understand the vital role finance plays within an organisation.

You'll attend college one day per week to develop your technical knowledge, whilst spending the rest of your time learning on the job. An average week will combine practical workplace learning with dedicated study time, allowing you to develop both your professional skills and technical knowledge. As your confidence and experience grow, you'll take on increasing responsibility and gain exposure to a wide range of accounting activities, helping you build a strong foundation for a successful career in finance.

Key responsibilities include:
- Posting financial transactions accurately onto the company's accounting software.
- Assisting with monthly reconciliations to ensure financial records are complete and accurate.
- Supporting the preparation of monthly and year-end financial reports.
- Helping to process invoices and maintain financial records.
- Assisting with the annual audit by gathering information and supporting documentation.
- Working with colleagues across the organisation to resolve finance-related queries.
- Learning and applying accounting principles, processes, and best practices as part of your apprenticeship programme.

Additional information

- Salary: £19k - £21k.

Candidate Requirements
- Candidates should possess strong Analytical Skills to interpret financial data and support decision-making.
- Candidates should possess foundational knowledge in Finance and an interest in charity or non-profit financial management.
- Candidates should possess an understanding of Financial Statements and the ability to assist in their preparation and review.
- Candidates should possess basic Accounting skills, including familiarity with bookkeeping and reconciliations.
- Candidates should possess clear and professional Communication skills for working with finance colleagues and wider teams.
- Additional beneficial qualifications include proficiency in spreadsheet software (e.g., Excel), attention to detail, good organizational skills, and a willingness to learn.
- Studying toward or interest in a finance, accounting, or business-related qualification is advantageous.
